Boy band fans, brace yourselves! Australian pop rockers 5 Seconds of Summer may be about to overtake One Direction in the battle of the cute boy bands. The four cheeky chappies first teamed up in 2011 when the school friends formed a band and began recording cover songs which they then posted on YouTube.

Made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Good and Ashton Irwin 5 Seconds of Summer, affectionately nicknamed 5SOS by their enthusiastic fans, have gathered nearly 2 and a half million Twitter followers, still falling shy of One Direction’s 18 million fans, but certainly showing potential. The boys quickly became an internet sensation, cemented when they supported 1D on tour around the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand in 2013. They have since been signed to Capitol Records and are currently hard at work on their debut album.

5SOS have definitely got the boy band look down to a tee and we predict hoards of screaming girls will soon be pursuing them around the world, 1D style. They were received with glee by 1D concert goers, and in turn they put on an enthusiastic and energetic performance as would be expected for a bunch of boys all born post-1994.

5 Seconds of Summer’s debut single She Looks So Perfect was made available on iTunes for fans to pre-order. Within a couple of days the track had reached number one in a grand total of 39 countries, including the UK, New Zealand and Australia. If that didn’t give the boys a boost of confidence we don’t know what will!

While many are hailing 5SOS as the new 1D, the two bands couldn’t really have much more different sounds. 5SO cite Blink-182, Ed Sheeran and Busted among their musical influences, and this is quite recognisable in their own sound. The 5 Seconds of Summer boys definitely channel a Busted/McFly vibe, rather than the traditional pop music produced by One Direction. The 5SOS boys are also a little rougher around the edges, although they may be just as cute as One Direction, these guys work a bit of a punkier style, setting them apart from Harry Styles and crew.

We predict that these guys are going to be absolutely huge and while we don’t think they are the new 1D as both bands are stylistically different, we do think 1D should keep an eye on their fans. We won’t be surprised if 5SOS manage to steal a few away from them.  We’ll be keeping an eye on their ever increasing Twitter followers and will keep you lot posted.
