Halle Berry made history back in 2002 when she won the best actress Oscar for her acclaimed role in Monster’s Ball – but, 15 years later, she has said that it has “meant nothing” for wider diversity in the movie industry.

She is still the only black woman to have scooped the main award for female actors at the Academy Awards, and during a new interview with Teen Vogue magazine, she recalled that when the nominations for the 2015 Oscars were announced, she was “profoundly hurt” that no ethnic minority actors or directors were up for any of the major prizes.

The Academy Awards Boycott: Both Sides Of The Debate

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Chris Rock Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith

This year's Academy Awards season is turning out to be a pretty intense ride, with the uproar over the nominations' lack of cultural diversity causing a division in the entertainment world. While some people are saying that they're planning to boycott the ceremony when it was revealed that not one black actor or director had been nominated, others are saying that the situation has been blown way out of proportion.

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will SmithJada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith are skipping the 2016 Oscars ceremony

So what exactly is the debate? This is year is the second year in a row that not one person of colour has been nominated for an Oscar in the major categories. It's not even that it hasn't been an option, especially when you look at the Golden Globe nominations and the calibre of movies featuring black lead actors in 2015 like 'Chi-Raq', 'Creed', 'Beasts of No Nation', 'Straight Outta Compton' and 'Concussion'. Last year, admittedly, did see fewer options. However, 'Selma' was one of the biggest movies of the year (and probably one of the most important in this decade) but still only managed to scoop a Best Original Song prize. Justin Simien's 'Dear White People' wasn't recognised at all and nor was Denzel Washington's 'The Equalizer'.

Oscar Nominations Both Refine And Muddle The Awards Race

This year's race feels like the tightest in years, with no clear frontrunner. Instead, four very different films lead the pack. Two are true-life, issue-based movies: the tense Spotlight and the more comical The Big Short. And then there's the wild action of Mad Max: Fury Road and the wrenching adventure of The Revenant.

Meanwhile, in the acting fields, Leonardo Dicaprio looks like he'll finally win an Oscar with his fifth acting nomination. And the Academy surely won't be able to resist giving a trophy to Sylvester Stallone. For Best Actress, Brie Larson is the one to beat, although Saoirse Ronan has a lot of support. And it should be noted that, since the average age of an Oscar voter is 63, beloved veteran Charlotte Rampling shouldn't be ruled out. In Supporting Actress, two nominees (Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara) have been named for what are actually lead roles, so they may have an edge to beat the formidable Kate Winslet or Jennifer Jason Leigh.

So he offended loads of people with some jokes, so what? What else do you want from a host? Did Seth Macfarlane’s all-singing, all-dancing performance at last year’s Oscars really inspire a new style of presenting? We don’t think it did. Gervais has proved he’s amongst the funniest there is with The Office, Extras, his work with Karl Pilkington and Derek, and, quite frankly, his dry, deadpan style is translating to America recently, especially with the success of Girls creator Lena Dunham and comedian Louis C.K.

Seth MacFarlane’s Oscar Jokes Criticized By Lawmakers

Seth Macfarlane Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Seth Macfarlane was always a risky choice as Oscars host; his brash, unflinching style of humor was designed to suck in a younger audience, expanding on that coveted demographic, but what actually happened is he annoyed everyone.

He annoyed some people just because he’s pretty annoying, but, and more importantly, he managed to offend a rather large amount of ‘groups’. MacFarlane's jokes “reduced our finest female actresses to caricatures and stereotypes, degrading women as a whole and the filmmaking industry itself,” wrote Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson in a letter to Hawk Koch, president of the academy.“It is unacceptable for the entity that celebrates film-making and pop culture to have Seth MacFarlane deliver a misogynistic and degrading monologue against actresses who have shown courage in addressing thought-provoking and realistic life experiences on film," Lowenthal and Jackson wrote in their letter. They then asked the academy to condemn MacFarlane’s behavior and “commit to using better judgment in their future choices of content and hosts.” But in a fleeting moment of defence for MacFarlane: the producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron deserve some castigating, too.

Should Adele Have Won The Oscar For Skyfall?

Adele Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Adele celebrated her Oscar win like so many others: tears and thankyous. But did she only win because of the Bond tribute that punctuated The 85th Academy Awards? If so, what should it have been?

Well it certainly shouldn’t have been Seth McFarlane’s Everybody Needs A Best Friend from his own film, Ted. We could only just stand his smug grin while he presented the ceremony, but to see him actually take an award for anything would have been a step too far. And he would have probably tried to sing, again, and that’s not good. It’s bad. The lack of press for Chasing Ice probably meant the song, Before My Time was a doomed nomination. Written by J. Ralph, and featuring Scarlett Johansson on vocals, this is one that could have won on a different night, and perhaps in a different film. Now we get to the stuff that could have won. Suddenly, from Les Miserables, was a powerful tune, and, considering Les Mis is a musical, it was integral to the film - perhaps a more worthy contender. Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi was our winner, though. This poignant, well-placed song fitted the film perfectly, and we believe Pi should have been recognized for its score as well as its visual effects.

Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old actress nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars on Sunday, has received a personal apology from Steve Hannah, the chief executive of satirical newspaper The Onion, after it tweeted an offensive post about the young star. Wallis was dubbed a "c*nt" in the offensive tweet, that caused a storm during the Academy Awards broadcast.

"On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars," Steve Hannah wrote on the publication's Facebook page. "It was crude and offensive-not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting." The offending tweet - "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c***, right?" - was deleted about an hour after it was posted, though plenty of users, including some celebrities, were up in arms. Wendell Pierce of HBO's The Wire demanded that the publication identify the author of the tweet. "Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor, I call it horrendous," he tweeted. Pierce later added, "It doesn't matter what the intent was, it was offensive and they should apologize to Quvenzhane."

The Onion's apology continued, "We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again. In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible. Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry." The tweet was posted during a night when Seth Macfarlane joked "it'll be 16 years" before Wallis would be too old for George Clooney.

Sofia Vergara Illness: Modern Family Star Misses Oscars, But What With?

Sofia Vergara Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Sofia Vergara's illness means her absence was noted from The Oscars. With the glut of Hollywood A-listers who did turn up to the Oscars you wouldn’t think people would be too concerned with who wasn’t there, with enough star power to dissect for weeks to come. That’s not how it works though of course, and so one of the big (well, ok, slightly medium) questions was: where was Sofia Vergara?

The Modern Family actress was a notable absentee from a red carpet otherwise resplendent with the great and the good of the acting world. At one point last week the Daily Mail had reported that the star had actually been hospitalized from a mystery illness – something that has since been widely denied. Still, it seemed like something may well be a-miss, and that was brought into stark focus when the usually ubiquitous actress was missing from the festivities.

Thankfully it appears that the mystery illness is an all-too-familiar one – although not particularly pleasant. Vergara Tweeted during the Oscars on Sunday (February 24, 2013) “Watching the Oscars at home so I dont give everyone the flu haha!” putting an end to all speculation. She still made an effort for the occasion however, posting a picture of herself in leopard print pyjamas and a big comfortable blanket. To be honest, that’s very similar to how we experienced the Oscars this year too.

Crutches And No Call From Robert Pattinson Makes For A Miserable Kristen Stewart On Oscars Night

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Not everyone was having a great time at The Oscars last Sunday (February 24, 2013); Twilight star Kristen Stewart was apparently having a grim old time, the actress walking around with the aid of crutches for some of the night after injuring her foot. Worse than that, though, her boyfriend Robert Pattinson didn’t call her once.

“Kristen Stewart was VERY depressed at the Oscars,” an insider told Hollywood Life. “She thought Robert Pattinson would at least call and congratulate her but he didn’t at all. She kept her phone near her and checked it for texts but they never came.” Stewart was there as a guest, and also to present the award for best production design, alongside Daniel Radcliffe. “She got injured beforehand and was mortified about the limp,” Hollywood Life’s insider continued. “She thought she looked ridiculous on the show and was really self-conscious. She just wants some attention from him, but he won’t give her the time of day.”

So whilst Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper et al were living it up and celebrating their successes, K-Stew apparently cut an isolated figure. “It was just a bad weekend, between the injury and being lonely. She felt dumb and was holding back tears the whole night. Kristen was on the verge of tears during Oscars because Rob didn’t call her.”

Lawrence was being interviewed by Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulous, after winning her Oscar, when Jack Nicholson came along to congratulate her and Lawrence ended up getting a little flirty with the Hollywood veteran.

Sofia Vergara Illness Keeps Modern Family Star Away From The Oscars

Sofia Vergara Ty Burrell Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Sofia Vergara’s illness was the reason that the Modern Family actress missed out on The Oscars. The 40 year-old  kindly decided that she would be better off watching the ceremony on TV, rather than attending and infecting the entire movie industry, in the process. Very thoughtful of her, though we can’t imagine that she would have had too much fun if she was full of flu; some reports have suggested that the Columbian beauty was even hospitalized by the illness.

The New York Post report that Vergara and her fiancé Nick Lobe were spotted at Boa Steakhouse in West Hollywood on the Friday night before The Oscars. Sofia reportedly “beamed” as she was escorted to the car by her beau, after the meal. It looks as though the illness must have hit sometime after Friday night in that case. On Sunday night, Sofia tweeted a picture of herself laying down in bed with one eye shut, with the message “watching the Oscars at home so I don’t give everyone the flu haha” so if she had been hospitalized with the illness, it doesn’t seem that it was serious enough to keep her in. Oh and for the record, Vergara’s commitment to wearing leopard still extends to being ill in bed.

Vergara was recently photographed looking much fitter and healthier on the set of Modern Family, as her character Gloria is seen learning to skate with co-star Ty Burrell. Leopard print skates were, of course, a necessity for the filming of these scenes.

Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart Breaking Up? So That's Why She Was So Miserable On Stage At The Oscars

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Daniel Radcliffe Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

The Oscars this year were an interesting affair, with very few bad decisions made. The Les Mis cast sang wonderfully, as did Adele and while a few were offended by Seth MacFarlane's stuffed bear character 'Ted', the majority found it funny. However, choosing Kristen Stewart to give an award was easily one of the worst decisions made since she was cast in... any films.

No. 1: Don't Call A Nine Year Old A C*nt - The Onion Tightens Twitter Rules After Quvenzhane Wallis Insult

Quvenzhane Wallis Jennifer Lawrence Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Rule number one: Don’t call a nine year-old a c*nt. We can only assume that this was the opening gambit of The Onion’s “new and tighter Twitter procedures” after they were forced to apologise for calling Quvenzhane Wallis a c*nt. Yes. That’s Quvenzhane Wallis, the nine year-old Oscar nominee. There’s a fine line between humour and insult, that’s for sure, but The Onion well and truly overstepped that line when they used the remark in a Tweet on Oscars night (February 24, 2013).

The satirical US publication issued a statement of apology, after deleting the offending tweet (but not before it had been re-tweeted several hundred times). The Onion’s CEO, Steve Hannah said “It was crude and offensive - not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting,” The Telegraph reported. He added “Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry” and explained that those involved in writing and posting the Tweet would be reprimanded.

So far, Quvenzhane Wallis has not commented on the tweet. Wallis did not win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild but instead lost out to Jennifer Lawrence. If she had won, she would have been the youngest actress ever to take home the golden statuette.

Zero Dark Thirty Wins Only One Oscar Through Rare Tied Award

Kathryn Bigelow Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Ben Affleck Steven Spielberg Daniel Day Lewis Ang Lee

If there’s anything worse that winning just one Oscar after your film was nominated for five, it's winning Best Sound Editing, and if there’s anything more embarrassing that that, it’s winning Best Sound Editing in a rare tied award with Skyfall.

Zero Dark Thirty’s failure at the 85th Academy Awards can be attributed, at least in part, to a trio of US senators, who, on December 19 last year, complained that the film was “grossly inaccurate” for implying torture played a part in tracking down the al-Qa’ida leader. The controversy surrounding the political implications of her film, led director Kathryn Bigelow to write a piece in the Los Angeles Times. “Those of us who work in the arts know that depiction is not endorsement. If it was, no artist would be able to paint inhumane practices, no author could write about them, and no filmmaker could delve into the thorny subjects of our time.”
