Nearly 20,000 people have signed a petition to stop Adam Lambert heading Singapore’s New Year Countdown concert. The petition calls for the former 'American Idol' finalist to be removed from the show due to his "active promotion of a highly sexualised lifestyle and LGBT rights, both of which are contrary to mainstream Singaporean values.”

Adam LambertSome Singaporeans don’t want to see Adam Lambert on New Year’s Eve.

The petition describes Lambert as ‘a performer fraught with controversy even in his home country, the United States of America.’ ‘During the live American Music Awards 2009, Lambert engaged in sexualised acts, including kissing a male band member, on stage,’ it continues.

‘Given Lambert’s unpredictability, and out of concern that he would repeat his offensive acts, 'Good Morning America' of the ABC News Network cancelled his scheduled performance. His most recent music video “Another Lonely Night” from his album The Original High features female showgirls and male strippers performing acts of indecency.’

The petition then goes on to criticise Lambert for his ‘active promotion of a highly sexualised lifestyle and LGBT rights’, which they say are ‘contrary to mainstream Singaporean values.’ In Singapore homosexuality is not technically illegal but homosexual acts are forbidden.

Speaking to CNBC, P.N. Balji, former chief editor of Singapore newspaper Today and media consultant at RHT Comms and Relations said he believed "the real reason why the petitioning group wants Adam Lambert banned from performing is his LGBT lifestyle."

Balji also stated that the term "family-friendly" is used frequently in the petition and in its comments section, which he believes is another way the petitioners are expressing an anti-gay view. However a counter petition has now been created to support Lambert’s performance. It has so fair gained nearly 25,000 signatures.

'We the moral majority of Singapore utterly denounce and condemn the obvious sexual orientation discrimination demonstrated by the other petition on this site that is against Adam Lambert performing in Countdown 2016,’ the petition reads.

‘Please allow Adam Lambert to perform in Countdown 2016 to demonstrate to the whole world that Singapore is a country that shuns discrimination and promotes diverse inclusive points of view. Discrimination has no place in Singapore and these groups need to work towards a together Singapore not a divisive Singapore.’
