Adam Levine says acne left him ''depressed''.

The Maroon 5 singer - who announced he is engaged to Victoria's Secret babe Behati Prinsloo last week - has revealed he used to suffer from nasty breakouts on his face and is still self conscious about his appearance.

Speaking to 'Access Hollywood', he said: ''When I was in high school and I had acne, I spent a lot of time sulking in my room. I was depressed. I was not happy.

''High school is hard enough, but having this problem and knowing that everyone is looking at you in the hallways ... and I went to a small school and clearly nobody has acne like I did.''

'The Voice' USA coach admits that despite being 34 years old, he still suffers from spots and believes it's important to banish the oily bacteria because it improves self-confidence and boosts morale.

He explained: ''I still use [acne cream] Proactiv+. Dealing with [bad skin] is an important thing because you will probably be able to be a little happier. Everyone is insecure to a certain point extent. I'm not made of steel. Things can bother me about my appearance all the time and they do.''
