Adele dominated the BBC Music Awards on Monday night, taking home two of the top prizes.

The singer, who was unable to attend the ceremony, picked up the awards for song of the year, for ‘Hello’ and album of the year for 25.

In a thank-you message to fans Adele said: “I’m so sorry I’m not there. I’ll be home soon and I can’t wait.

“It’s been a long year on the road and this makes me a little less homesick. I can’t wait for Wembley and then to get back to normal.

“Special thanks to all my fans for voting for the song, you are all amazing. Merry Christmas. Love Adele.”

Also absent from the ceremony were Coldplay, who beat David Bowie to be named best British artist. The band are currently in Australia and sent a video message before going onstage in Melbourne.

"Sorry we're not there," frontman Chris Martin said. ”Look at all those people - and we love you and we're so grateful and we'll see you so soon.”

The 1975 picked up the award for best live performance on BBC Radio 1, for their cover of One Direction's ‘That's What Makes You Beautiful’.

Accepting the award singer Matt Healy said: "It's a bizarre award. It's for a performance of a song we didn't write, by an artist who also didn't write it!

“I don't know how far it goes back... it's probably the guy who did the lights who deserves the credit - but I'll take it!”.

London-born singer Izzy Bizu, was named BBC Introducing artist of the year, following the release of debut album, A Moment of Madness.
