Adele's 'Someone Like You' is the most downloaded track of all time in the UK.

The British music industry is celebrating a milestone as the total number of digital singles sold hit the one billion mark last night (08.04.13).

According to the Official Charts Company - which began counting downloads from official sources nine years ago - Adele's track has sold more than any other, with 1.48 million downloads.

She is closely followed by Maroon 5's 'Moves Like Jagger' which has sold 1.40 million digital copies.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: ''The explosion in download sales over the past nine years means we are genuinely now living in the digital music age - with Adele as our queen.''

Sales have exploded from 500,000 a week to more than three million a week since downloads were first counted.

It has also been rumoured this week Adele has returned to the studio to start work on the follow up to '21', her second album, which included 'Someone Like You'.

A source said: ''Adele wants to move with the times and is trying to make her new record sound as edgy as possible.

''The team she's assembled is first rate and she's confident they can help match the success of her first two albums.
