The annual Sunday Times Rich List has revealed Adele to be the wealthiest ever British female musician.

Ahead of the publication of the full list this weekend, a run-down of the fifty richest musical millionaires in Britain and Ireland released on Thursday (April 21st) has put the Tottenham-born singer’s personal wealth at £85 million – an increase of £35 million on last year – in 30th place overall.

Alongside Ed Sheeran in 49th place with £45 million, she’s one of just two musicians under the age of 30 on the list, which is dominated by veteran rock acts and topped by Sir Paul McCartney, whose fortune is estimated at £760 million.

Adele, who released her third album 25 at the end of last year, famously didn’t make it available to stream on any online services, forcing fans to buy physical or digital copies of it. The record has now sold more than 15 million across the globe so far, with the singer currently in the middle of a lucrative tour on the back of winning four BRIT Awards last month.

The brain trust behind the rich list reckon her wealth is only going to go up from this point. “Adele is only 27 so I would see her getting in the main list of the richest 1,000 in a couple of years - she is only £15 to £20m away now,” said the publication’s editor Ian Coxon.

He added that the domination of the list by older musicians – for instance, the combined wealth of the Rolling Stones is placed at £630 million – is down to continuing to perform live in their old age and still making new music, while taking advantage of back catalogue sales at the same time.

Two new entries in the list of fifty musicians have inherited their wealth from musicians: Iman Abdulmajid and Duncan Jones (David Bowie’s wife and son) with £90 million in 29th place, and Olivia and Dhani Harrison (George Harrison’s beneficiaries) with £220 million in sixth place.
