Nearly twenty years after he first appeared on British TV screens, the floppy-haired amateur detective Jonathan Creek, played by Alan Davies, is returning for a one-off special episode on the BBC.

Titled ‘Daemons’ Roost’ and written by David Renwick, the new episode, which has already commenced filming, will again feature Sarah Alexander as Creek’s wife Polly, along with guest stars Warwick Davis, Emun Elliott and Rosalind March.

The 90-minute episode will apparently concern the tricks of a 19th century sorcerer who would use satanic rituals to terrorise his victims, and a horror-movie director named Nathan Clore who lives in the same house in the modern day.

Jonathan CreekAlan Davies is to reprise his iconic role as 'Jonathan Creek' for a one-off special episode

“Jonathan Creek finds himself in real danger. It's the spookiest episode ever,” 50 year old Davies told the BBC on Tuesday (August 2nd). The broadcast date for the new episode has not yet been confirmed, however, though it is predicted it will be around the Christmas / New Year period like many of the show’s past stand-alone episodes.

The popular comedy-drama series, which over the decades has regularly attracted viewing figures of roughly 10 million, was last seen in early 2014, when a fifth series consisting of three hour-length episodes was broadcast to a rather tepid critical response.

‘Jonathan Creek’ first appeared on British screens way back in 1997, when Caroline Quentin teamed up with Davies’ illusionist character to help him explain a series of seemingly impossible murders and other mysteries. It won the BAFTA for Best Drama Series in 1998 for its first season.

The BBC’s controller of commissioning, Shane Allen, also added: “Another sublime and intricately conceived treat from David Renwick and a welcome return for Alan Davies in this signature role. You can see the influence of David's unique blend of dark comedy and crimes drama across television since the debut of this show nearly 20 years ago.”
