It was a solid debut, but it was always going to be, right?
Alec Baldwin is a man of many talents; he’s a comedian, a writer, a podcaster and a presenter. So it’s no surprise that his debut on MSNBC’s new ‘Up Late’ program went by without a hitch with Baldwin anchoring things. His first guest: New York City mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio.
In-between throwing questions on job creation, income inequality and how de Blasio has dealt with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Balwdin’s cadence was professional with a hint of the jovial, as his cheeky demeanor always suggests. Discussion soon turned to de Blasio's views on legalizing marijuana and New York's Stop-and-Frisk police policies.
And buying into the idea of a ‘chat’ show, Baldwin did just that; he chatted, offering up anecdotes and stories of his own. “I remember during my lifetime I would meet women, and it was almost like God would say to me, ‘Now, this woman here is not the one you are going to end up with, but she is going to be a lot like this woman; look at this woman, study this woman,’ ” he said. “And when my wife showed up, he was like, ‘You recognize her now?’”
Adding a touch of flair to a well-trodden TV dynamic, Baldwin took the late night chat format, alchemising his experience of comedy and dramatic acting and infusing those disciplined, channeling them into a professional, warm and engaging show.
"I can't give a declaration of principles like Charles Foster Kane had for his newspapers," Baldwin said. The show will be "more personal than promotional," he added.
Academy Award nominated actress Debra Winger will be on next Friday's Up Late.
