Alex Trebek is a Canadian man. Alex Trebek is a sports-fan. Alex Trebek knows who Magic Johnson is, and more importantly, who Wayne Gretzky Is. All of this means the Jeopardy! host wasn't impressed with a contestant who gave a comically incorrect on the game-show this week.

The clue was: '100+ assists in an NHL season has been accomplished only 13 times, 11 times by this player.' Of course the answer is Wayne Gretzky. The contestant's answer was Magic Johnson, the NBA basketball star.

"Oh no" said Trebek when the contestant answered, later adding, "we're talking about hockey, not the NBA"

Joe, the contestant, later took to Reddit to explain his error, "I totally missed the NHL part and focused on the assists. Just a terribly embarrassing answer all around,"

"You can see me mouth the word "sh*t!"" he added.

It's the second time that Jeopardy! has been in the headlines recently, with pantomime villain contestant Arthur Chu finally ending his magnificent run on the show with $180,000 in earnings. Many had criticized Chu's aggressive playing though, though Trebek defended the quizzer on the Fox News program.

"He's a good player, and I think the accusations against his style of play have no merit to them. When you guys watch the show, you watch it because you're competitive. You want to see how well you do compared to the contestants. But also, as a minor side to that, you watch because you want to see... You'll pick a favorite"

"You want to see if this guy succeeds, or she does better than him. And if you don't like a contestant - and obviously there are a number of people who have taken a dislike to Arthur Chu - then it's going to come out. And in this day and age of 'twitters,' and everybody's got a cell phone, and everybody's communicating immediately - then the story gets blown all out of proportion."
