He might be best known for his comedic and presenting skills, but actor Alexander Armstrong is set to make a move into the world of music. The presenter of the BBC’s popular game show ‘Pointless’ has announced that he’s to record a classical music album.

Armstrong has signed to Warner Music subsidiary label East West to make an album of choral music to “celebrate songs of the British Isles”, and will begin work on it later this summer. He will collaborate with producer Simon Franglen, who has worked on movie soundtracks with the likes of James Horner and Thomas Newman for films like Avatar, Skyfall, The Amazing Spider-Man and Titanic.

Pretty illustrious company he’ll be keeping for a debut record, then!

45 year old Armstrong, who has presented ‘Pointless’ alongside Richard Osman since 2009, will be fulfilling a lifelong ambition by making the album. He said in a statement “I am so excited to be joining the illustrious stable at East West and to be working with this wonderful team. Singing has had to take a back seat for the past 25 years of my life, but with this fabulous project I get to put that right.”

Growing up, Armstrong was a chorister at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh and then a choral scholar at Cambridge University’s Trinity College as a baritone. He’s also performed live as the frontman of the Alexander Armstrong Band, and presents a weekly show on Classic FM on Saturday afternoons.

Conrad Withey, an A&R man at East West, also added his reaction by saying "I am incredibly excited to welcome Alexander to East West.”

“He is a fantastic performer, loved across the nation for his TV and comedy work, and we are about to embark on an artistic journey that will celebrate his lesser known but just as impressive talents as a singer.”

As yet, the album neither has a release date nor a title, but Armstrong is performing on the BBC’s program ‘VE Day: A Party to Remember’ on Saturday May 9th and ITV’s ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ on Sunday May 10th.
