The Giver Review

Good

Yet another teen sci-fi adventure, this movie may be sharply well-made but it struggles to find anything to say to an audience that has explored these themes much more meaningfully in films like The Hunger Games and Divergent. A solid cast makes it watchable, but a swelling flood of sentimentality undermines everything. And there isn't much subtext there to begin with.

Set in the distant future, society has rebuilt itself after "The Ruin" by eliminating all emotions, memories and art. The story centres on 18-year-old Jonas (BrentonThwaites), who is stunned to be selected as the next Receiver of Memories, working with the Giver (Jeff Bridges) to understand everything the elders have deliberately obliterated through both daily drug injections and some sort of magical barrier beyond the surrounding, forbidden mist. But the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) is worried that Jonas is going rogue with his new knowledge, and Jonas' parents (Alexander Skarsgard and Katie Holmes) are also noticing something is amiss. So when Jonas tries to enlist his childhood pals Fiona and Asher (Odeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan) in small acts of rebellion, things come to a head.

Director Phillip Noyce creates a terrific visual look for the film's setting, with slickly designed sets,eye-catching effects and a colour scheme that begins in black and white and slowly adds hues as Jonas discovers more truth. But nothing about this society resonates: the best science-fiction tells us something about our world here and now, but parallels are very hard to spot in this faux utopia. Instead, we are faced with an implausible set-up that tries to convince us that people would mindlessly carry on without emotional or physical connections. And the idea that deleting these from human existence would make for a more peaceful society is just silly. Sure, we'd all like a world without violence and bigotry, but at the expense of personal freedom?

True Blood's Joe Manganiello Shines Light On Dramatic Season 7 Premiere Shooting

Joe Manganiello Alexander Skarsgard Robert Kazinsky Anna Paquin

True Blood season seven, episode three premiered with a bang last night, killing off one of the series characters in a twist no one saw coming. Well, not exactly no one: Joe Manganiello's character Alcide met his untimely demise after being shot but the actor has said he had sensed a change in the wind for some time.

In dramatic final season style, werewolf Alcide Herveaux was coldly shot in the chest before being shot again in the face by the gun-wielding humans of Bon Temps.

"I called it! I called it last year," the actor told Buzzfeed. "As soon as I read the Season 6 finale and saw that Sookie [Anna Paquin] got with Alcide, I turned to my then-girlfriend right away and said, 'They're going to kill me - and if they don't, they're crazy.'"

The Giver - Teaser Trailer

Jonas is a young man who lives in a community where everybody is the same. Pain and suffering has been abolished by authorities simply by forcing everyone to conform and prohibiting any form of variance. Jonas is about to become an exception to the rule when he is selected as the next Receiver of Memories. His new role requires training from a man called The Giver (the former Receiver) who will subsequently imbue Jonas with knowledge of the world before this compliant society. With that he will understand the pain of death and conflict, but will also begin to understand the importance of love and distinction and it is this that forces him to break away from his community - wishing to live a life with more depth and meaning. However, it soon becomes clear that he's not getting out that easily.

They're No Chris Hemsworth! Other Actors Considered For The Role Of 'Thor'

Chris Hemsworth Alexander Skarsgard Charlie Hunnam Liam Hemsworth

After owning the role in two hit movies, it’s hard to imagine any one other than gorgeous blond man-mountain, Chris Hemsworth, playing Marvel Comics superhero, Thor. You can’t even hear the word “Thor” without Chris coming into mind (we definitely don’t just sit here chanting “Thor” for this exact reason. Ahum).

chris hemsworth thor Thor has been played by Chris Hemsworth in both movies

But if you thought that he was the first choice to play the role, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Chris’ potential apparently didn’t shine through immediately for the producers, and although he auditioned early he was put to one side while other actors auditioned. Imagine if one of these actors had won the role instead of Chris. It’ll be hard to think about, but sometimes life is tough.

Robbie definately has the looks to be a leading lady

With filming set to begin this summer, Robbie looks set to join a cast that already includes Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Alexander Skarsgard as the loincloth-wearing tree swinger. The big-budget Warner Brothers production has been in the works for some time now, with Robbie's impending appointment to the film hopefully being the final piece of the puzzle needed to get filming of the latest take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel series underway.

Charlie Hunnam Jamie Dornan Alexander Skarsgard

Further details regarding the departure of Charlie Hunnam from the 50 Shades of Grey movie cast are beginning to come to light, all but confirming that scheduling conflicts played no part in the British actor's decision to quit his role as Christian Grey,

Universal head honchos, producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, director Sam Taylor-Johnson and author EL James have drafted a list of four men they want to replace Hunnam, they include: Jamie Dornan, Christian Cooke and Alexander Skarsgard

The studio is reeling with less than three weeks before the start of production, though the real reasons for the mess it's in appear to be filtering out.

Is Little Known Actor Jamie Dornan The New Christian Grey?

Charlie Hunnam Jamie Dornan Alexander Skarsgard

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie appears to be in turmoil. With now just 17 days until the first day of filming in Vancouver, the project - headed by Sam Taylor-Johnson - is without a leading man after Charlie Hunnam dropped out, citing a packed schedule.

Of course, Hunnam and his agent will have known his commitments to Sons of Anarchy when initially taking the part, therefore reports the actor got cold feet are probably not too far off the mark.

Hunnam was set to play the young, rich businessman Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of E.L. James 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' which will undoubtedly contain the explicit sex scenes featured in the controversial novel.

Charlie Hunnam is out! The actor sensationally left behind his role as Christian Grey in the upcoming FiftyShades of Grey movie adaptation following varied reports stating his schedule was too packed up already and that he had gotten cold feet over the immense pressure of the role. Now the race is one to find another Christian Grey and the shortlist of potential candidates seems to keep on growing.

Matt Bomer (L) is the bookie's favourite, but Alexander Skarsgard is still heavily rumoured with the role

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alexander Skarsgard is among the favorites to succeed Hunnam, with his steamy scenes in True Blood and his obvious sex appeal boding well with producers. The same report also states that Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan is also in line to take on the job, however neither of these rumors have been confirmed yet. THR have also reported that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal) has been brought in to adjust the script to accomodate another actor.

What Maisie Knew Review

Extraordinary

Even though this drama is based on a 115-year-old novel, it feels powerfully timely today in the way it recounts events surrounding a particularly grim divorce. As we see the story through the eyes of a young girl caught between her self-involved parents, we are emotionally drawn right to the heart of the matter. Of course, it takes skilled filmmakers and a far-above-average cast to make this work.

Maisie (Aprile) is the 6-year-old daughter of fading rocker Susanna (Moore) and art dealer Beale (Coogan), whose marriage isn't dissolving quietly. As fiery arguments echo around their New York apartment, Maisie can't quite understand their anger but feels her hope fading. Sure enough, they separate, and when she goes to visit Daddy she's unnerved to discover her nanny Margo (Vanderham) is now living with him. Then Mommy marries nice-guy barman Lincoln (Skarsgard), who becomes Maisie's most reliable friend as her parents use her as a weapon in their bitter custody battle.

Directors McGeehee and Siegel (Bee Season) cleverly maintain Maisie's point of view all the way through the film, so we only see and hear things as she would. Much of what happens is never explained to her, but we get it and we understand that she probably does too. This includes the shocking irresponsibility displayed by both Susanna and Beale, who continually dump Maisie on each other as a kind of assault. And because they're preoccupied with their work, it's up to Margo and Lincoln to pick up the slack.

'True Blood' Finale: Alexander Skarsgard Naked, But Did He Die?

Alexander Skarsgard Sam Trammell Anna Paquin

If you haven't seen the final episode of True Blood's sixth season that aired last night (18th Aug) maybe stop reading this page. If you saw it, we bet - like us - that you're pretty confused too and left slightly dazed by the sight of Alexander Skarsgård's full frontal naked performance, before bursting into flames whilst sunbathing in the snow.

Is Alexander Skarsgard's Eric Really Dead?

So Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Warlow (Rob Kazinsky) were finally set to get married but, as we all know, events in Bon Temps rarely stick to plan and this one went particularly awry. Sookie suddenly decides that she doesn't want to be Warlow's faerie-vampire bride and he suddenly drops his nice-guy façade to show what's been lurking underneath the whole time by tying her up and threatening her. Bill (Stephen Moyer), Jason (Ryan Kwanten) and Andy (Chris Bauer) cross over to the fairy plane and rescue to reluctant bride from her decidedly evil fiancé. Their fight culminates in Warlow getting staked through the chest.

The East Review

Very Good

Despite a bunch of cold characters and a deeply contrived plot, this film is so infused with hot topicality that we are held in its grip all the way through. The issue is corporate irresponsibility and grass-roots activism, both of which feel ripped straight from the headlines to give the movie an edgy, almost documentary urgency. On the other hand, it's nearly impossible to get involved in the story's inter-personal dramas.

Director Batmanglij is reteaming with Sound of My Voice actress-cowriter Marling, who this time plays Jane, a corporate-security spy assigned by her shark-like boss (Clarkson) to infiltrate the eco-terrorism group The East. The goal is to prevent them from attacking any of her clients. It takes Jane awhile to worm her way into the anarchists' inner sanctum, where she immediately finds an affinity with leader Benji (Skarsgard), medically trained Doc (Kebbell) and flamboyant Luca (Fernandez). It takes longer to warm to the prickly Izzy (Page), but eventually Jane finds herself part of the core team, invited to participate in a series of jams in which The East gives company bosses a taste of their own toxic medicine.

In the cast of a pharmaceutical giant, this is quite literally the case: they infect the executive (Ormond) with the dangerous drug she's selling to the developing world. And the gang also stages assaults on oil companies in ways that are eerily easy for us to identify with, because the activists are making an important point. Indeed, we never really doubt where the filmmakers' sympathies lie: even if their actions are illegal and rather nasty, these "terrorists" are the good guys. At least this moral complexity gives the film a brainy kick.

What Maisie Knew Trailer

Maisie is a 6-year-old girl whose parents are the veteran rock star Susanna and the art dealer Beale. As high profile as they are, Maisie is hardly living the high life as her selfish and ignorant folks never seem to have time to think about being parents and when their rocky relationship ends in a fiery divorce, she is used merely as a weapon in court as the bitter custody battle gets underway. Being passed from mother to father and vice versa hardly has the effect of making each parent want to spend more time with her to make up for their time apart as Susanna is often busy on tour and Beale takes many long work trips away. As a result, their respective new spouses Lincoln and Margo (also her ex-Nanny) are forced to take on the responsibility of caring for Maisie together and the young girl finds herself becoming happier by the day.

This is a heart-warming movie challenges the idea of child custody and is viewed through the eyes of an innocent girl who tries to construct a new family after her own is bitterly torn apart. Based on the novel of the same name by Henry James, this adaptation of 'What Maisie Knew' has been directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel ('Suture', 'Uncertainty', 'Bee Season') and written by Carroll Cartwright ('Dungeons & Dragons', 'Where the Money Is') and Nancy Doyne in her feature film debut.

Star of Juno and Hard Candy, Ellen Page has been being harassed by a crazed stalker, but has won out after a judge finally ordered the man stay away from Page and not contact her in any way for the following three years.

The LAPD claims the caller promised to go to the festival and 'kill Page.'"

Battleship Review

Very Good
You'd have to go back to 1998's Armageddon to find another film that so adeptly combines whopping apocalyptic action and corny save-the-planet heroics. Even if this feels like low-rent Michael Bay, it's a definitive popcorn blockbuster: a dumb movie that keeps us blissfully entertained.

Alex (Kitsch) is a smart guy who has wasted his life so, after getting in trouble while impressing a hot girl (Decker), his Naval-officer brother (Skarsgard) drafts him into service. Later on a Pacific Rim war-game exercise, Alex ends up in charge of the only ship nearby after aliens invade earth and put a force-field around Hawaii. Working with his plucky crew (including Rihanna, Asano, Tui and Plemons), Alex must figure out how to out-wit these Transformer-like killers. By the way, the hot girl turns out to be the daughter of the admiral (Neeson).
