The head of Vetements is expected to present his first show for the label in March 2016 at Paris Fashion Week and Balenciaga Chief Executive Isabelle Guichot said he was chosen for his ''mastery of techniques'', ''expertise and fashion knowledge'', and ''innovative and carefully considered approach''.
She added in an interview with WWD: ''We really wanted somebody that has a vision, and someone capable of reshuffling the cards. I was really amazed by his ability to develop an approach to the brand that was really new and that was really his own...what should be the attitude, what should be the silhouette, what should be the volumes.''
Gvasalia is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp and launched his own Vetements brand in 2014 after working for Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton.
He will combine his new role with his work for Vetements.
