The two main acting awards went to two other favourites for Oscar success: Cate Blanchett and Matthew Mcconaughey. Blanchett's role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine has been universally acclaimed since the film's release last year, whilst McConaughey has been regularly cited as giving the performance of his career in Dallas Buyer Club.

Jared Leto [L] and Matthew McConaughey [R] both won awards for their part in Dallas Buyer Club

The wins for the two mirrored the success of the two actors on Sunday, 12 Jan. when they both tasted success at the Golden Globes and it wasn't just in the acting categories where the success stories of Sunday night were emulated, and it is unlikely to be the last either. The latest win for McConaughey and Blanchett continues to prove their credentials as Oscar favourites, although there are a few thespians looking to stand in their way.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Amy Adams serve as their main rivals (as does Chiwetel Ejiofor in the male category), as they emulated their Golden Globes success with wins for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Comedy film, respectively. DiCaprio's portrayal of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street earned Martin Scorsese's controversial film it's only win of the night, whereas Adam's starring vehicle American Hustle ended the night as one of the most decorated films, earning wins for Best Comedy, Best Acting Ensemble and Best Hair & Make-up.
