Extraordinary

Leave it to a comedian to make one of the scariest movies in recent memory. Jordan Peele moves into writing and directing with this offbeat comedy, a fresh and fiendishly smart story with engaging characters and provocative themes. It's a combination of a knowing issue-based drama, lively romantic comedy and unhinged horror that hits all of its targets with precision. And it keeps us gleefully entertained with its escalating terror.

The story centres on Chris (Sicario's Daniel Kaluuya), whose girlfriend Rose (Girls' Allison Williams) invites him home for a weekend to meet her parents Missy and Dean (Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford). Rose assures Chris that they're so liberal that they won't mind at all that he's black. But things don't feel quite right from the start. For one thing, there are two creepy servants (Betty Gabriel and Marcus Henderson) who seem to be lurking everywhere. And Rose's brother Jeremy (Caleb Landry Jones) revels in stirring up problems. As things get increasingly freaky, Chris calls his best friend Rod (Lil Rel Howery), an airport security officer back in New York, for advice. Then things take an even more bizarre turn when Missy and Dean's friends arrive for an annual party.

Peele begins to play with the audience right from the start, using Michael Abels' disorienting music and Toby Oliver's quirky camerawork to maximum effect. Often this involves pushing us far too close to a character whose behaviour is just a bit off. Every moment is undercut with humour, including awkward moments and snappy gags that serve as a relief valve even as they set us up for something scary. It's such clever filmmaking that we have little choice but to sit back and enjoy the ride. And woven through all of this is an inventive and lacerating exploration of attitudes toward race in American society.

When Chris packs up for the weekend to go and meet his girlfriend Rose's family for the first time, his biggest concern is that they might not approve of him being a black man. Thankfully, they seem to be accepting, but he's slightly disturbed by a pair of strange black housekeepers that live there named Georgina and Walter. When his pal back home discovers that black people have been going missing from the area for years, he tries to brush it off in order to get through the weekend, but he can ignore it no longer when one of the missing people shows up at a garden party on the estate looking particularly disturbed and warning him to 'get out'. But it's much too late for that now.

Season three's twelfth and final episode, entitled 'Two Plane Rides,' began with a double revelation; the first hit when Hannah bumped into Adam's sister, Caroline, who had been living downstairs with Hannah's ex-stalker Laird and revealed that the pair were expecting a baby. The news coincided with Hannah opening a letter informing her that she'd been accepted on to the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop course. Her smile said it all.

Lena Dunham has hinted that she will quit acting in the near future, to concentrate on writing. The 'Girls' star covers the April issue of Glamour and it was in the accompanying interview that the 27-year-old dropped the bombshell.

Lena Dunham At SXSW - A Case Study In Not Hating Celebrities, Even When They're Wrong

Lena Dunham Allison Williams Zosia Mamet Adam Driver

Lena Dunham’s speech at SXSW was everything her supporters wanted it to be. The Girls creator did apologize again for that highly publicized molestation tweet – an actual full apology this time. It was about time, after the Twitter hate had been simmering for a couple of days. At the time she tweeted: ”I just made and deleted a not so great molestation joke. Sorry guys. I am really sleepy. SNL has a way bigger audience than our usual cozy girls audience, so I was seeing a rash of very different kinds of twitter rage.”

Lena Dunham gets it wrong often, but when it's right, it's very, very right.

In back-to-back tweets she added, “But I should know better, and do. Even naked girls get embarrassed. Sleep well and thanks for an amazing weekend.” It wasn’t enough to quell that infamous online rage. More to the point, Dunham talked about her experience in filmmaking, about funding for projects and her favorite topic, women in film and television, according to Variety. Dunham explained her “beg, borrow and steal” mentality when it comes to filmmaking. In the early days of her career, she maxed out a credit card, donated her $5,000 worth of babysitting funds, borrowed money from her parents and her best friend’s parents to make her DIY movies. According to her philosophy, creators have to create, no excuses. As she put it, “lack of budget is no longer an excuse. (I realized) holding up a camera and letting people wander around documentary style is no longer acceptable.”

In Praise Of The Newly Engaged 'Girls' Star, Allison Williams

Allison Williams Katy Perry

Unless you haven’t guessed, we’re huge Girls fans, so we were overjoyed to find out that the lovely Allison Williams has become engaged to her long-term love, Ricky Van Veen. Unlike the complicated love life of her on-screen role, Marnie, who is recovering from a painful breakup, Allison’s relationship looks to be on very steady ground. The pair have now been together for three years since they originally met through mutual friends.

Ricky is the co-founder of CollegeHumor, an immensely popular website which features regularly updating comedy videos and articles. Girls Recap: Season 3, Episode "Beachhouse" Features Too Much Beach, Too Little Duck Breast

Lena Dunham Allison Williams Jemima Kirke Zosia Mamet

The third season of Girls has been mildly disappointing so far, but when our heroines don’t have to face any major changes or life decisions, they actually look a lot like real people. Case in point: this week’s episode, which saw the gang’s resident Type A control freak Marnie try to take everyone on a successful vacation to “heal”. The healing in question wouldn’t be done at the Hamptons where, according to Marnie, “the beach is far too close to J Crew”, but to the North Fork. Cue aggressive healing.

Girls Cast, Season 1 Promo Still
The Girls need to heal, but Marnie might not have picked the best way.

Marnie has a whole list of planned activities, including (but not limited to) having fun together, proving to everyone via Instagram that the ladies can still have fun as a group, healing, healing at dinner, writing their wishes down on pieces of paper and then throwing them into a bonfire so that they can come true, grocery shopping, facemasks… etc. The list does not include having too many North Fork Fizzes, but who needs lists anyway.

Mindy Kaling Feels As Though 'Elle' Cover Critics Are "Insulting" Her

Mindy Kaling Allison Williams Amy Poehler Zooey Deschanel David Letterman

When Elle presented their four-cover edition of their latest edition, their 'Women in TV' issue, it featured four of the most prominent female TV stars working today. Among the four was The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling, whose cover caused an unwarranted amount of controversy and conversation over how the majority of her body was cropped out of the cover image, unlike the other, mostly full-body other three.

White, skinny actresses Allison Williams, Amy Poehler and Zooey Deschanel all feature from the knee up and in full colour on their respective cover photos for the February issue of the magazine, whereas Kaling's image is in black and white and her picture is much more close up than the rest, with her chest, face and one arm only seen in the picture. For some, this looked way too suspicious to be a coincidence and the online crusaders stood up for Kaling in their droves. Trouble is, Kaling didn't really want standing up for and the arguments her so-called supporters were crusading for were actually a little hurtful.

Girls' Star Allison Williams: "I Never Thought I'd Better Lindsay Lohan In Mean Girls"

Allison Williams

It's likely that Allison Williams, one-quarter of HBO's hugely popular drama 'Girls,' will become a hot commodity once she branches out into the movie world. Her on-going dramas with Lena Dunham's character Hannah on Girls have been the tense undercurrent of series two - showing, if nothing else, that Williams can act. She also looks the part and presumably has scripts flying through the door, though the 24-year-old from Connecticut remembers a time when she assumed nothing like this was at all possible.

"When 'Mean Girls' came out, I just thought Lindsay Lohan was genius. I didn't understand how I could ever come close to that if they didn't let me start young," she told the Los Angeles Times, adding, "I've come to realize it's not a zero-sum game. When I see performances like Jennifer Lawrence's in 'Silver Linings Playbook,' I think, 'God, what a great role.' But maybe, just maybe, she watches 'Girls' and maybe, just maybe, she wishes she was on 'Girls'" It's more than likely, given Williams' HBO show has now garnered a cult following that spans the globe.

She's certainly put the work in. Williams worked as Tiny Fey's assistant during the filming of 'Baby Mama' and served as a utilities stand-in for the 'Boardwalk Empire' pilot, which must have been as dull as it sounds. She also worked as a production assistant on Robert Altman's last movie 'A Prairie Home Companion.' "I was about 5 when I saw 'The Wizard of Oz," she said. "I just thought it was so amazing that they all played two characters and I was like, 'What kind of job is that?' Once I realized it was acting, I knew I wanted to do it."
