American Idol Hopes To Revive Itself After Season 13

American Idol Kelly Clarkson Candice Glover Scotty Mccreery Phillip Phillips

Things have been up and down lately for 'American Idol,' as the singing competition is reaching the end of its 13th season. The ratings for one of the more recent episodes reached an all-time low in viewers -- a measly 7 million, while the show’s highest attraction drew in 30 million. Additionally, publicity for one of the finalists hasn’t been too hot either, as contestant Caleb Johnson found himself in a bit of trouble when he called his social media critics “retards” in a video interview with AfterBuzz TV. Either way, the show must go on, and Idol’s two night season finale begins on Tuesday, May 20 as Johnson takes on Jena Irene for the 'American Idol' crown.

“We don’t really care who wins,” Johnson told a group of press outside of Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on May 19. Irene, on the other hand, stated that win or lose, she wanted to “go out on a good note.” Irene may have the better philosophy here, because as 'American Idol' grows older and older, it raises the question: does anyone really care who wins 'American Idol' anymore?

And Then There Were Three - Who Got Voted Off "American Idol" This Week?

American Idol Randy Jackson

Well, it’s about that time again – time to announce the top three contestants on this year’s round of American Idol. Where did the time go? So from last night’s performances we know that Jena Irene is pretty much safe – when you make Jennifer Lopez so excited that she starts dropping F-bombs on camera, it’s a pretty safe bet that you aren’t going home (well, not permanently anyway). Beware of spoilers ahead.

Randy Jackson
Randy Jackson had the spotlight before the finalists were announced.

Before the final reveal, however, we got to hear some of Randy Jackson’s oh-so-valuable critique (we’re guessing the show just had too much time leftover). Despite the fact that Jackson’s praise was largely unnecessary, it was nice to hear him being so unusually nice to the contestants, so we’ll let that slide.

Jena Irene Impresses 'American Idol' Judges With Elvis Cover

Jennifer Lopez American Idol

Sure, Jena Irene delivered a great performance on Wednesday’s American Idol, but FCC warning-worthy? Jennifer Lopez seems to think so. Wednesday’s show was centered around the theme of love, with each of the four remaining contestants performing three songs – a “break-up”, “make-up” and “dedication”. In the end, Jena’s “dedication” performance stole the show. The 17-year-old musician reminded everyone what got her into the final four with a cover of Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.

Jena Irene
As of last night, Jena is a favorite for the final three.

Jena accompanied herself on the piano and, in a rather endearing twist, dedicated the song to her mother, ahead of Mother’s Day Sunday. Jennifer Lopez was apparently so stunned during her performance, that she could be seen mouthing “f—k” to Randy Jackson, before the cameras cut away from her to the audience. Well, the FCC probably won’t be knocking on Idol’s door anytime soon, but Ryan Seacrest still poked fun at Lopez for the incident, saying: "We saw you in that song and you turned to Randy and you said FUN."

"American Idol" Results: Contestants Can't Agree, Jennifer Lopez Is Shocked

American Idol Ryan Seacrest Jennifer Lopez Keith Urban Harry Connick Jr.

The results of this week’s American Idol might have shocked many people, but none more so than Jennifer Lopez. This warning might be redundant, but we’re giving it anyway – spoilers ahead.

With five contestants left, it was time for a slight rule change. Did the producers lift that idea from The Hunger Games? We may never know. Anyway, the new rules stated that the five remaining contestants were allowed to either axe the finalist with the lowest votes or keep him/her, but face a tougher contest next week.

Sam Woolf, American Idol
This week's lowest votes went to Sam Woolf.

American Idol Voting Recap: No One Saw That One Coming

American Idol Jennifer Lopez Harry Connick Jr.

Proceed with caution, spoilers below. Jennifer Lopez reminded us why she is everyone’s favorite American Idol judge during last night’s show. The singer broke out in tears after Malaya Watson owned the stage with Jennifer Hudson’s I Am Changing. The judges were unanimous on Malaya’s performance. Harry Connick Jr. called the teenager “a goldmine of talent.” J-Lo predicted Malaya would “run away with the title.” And yet, on Thursday night, Malaya Watson was voted off American Idol.

'American Idol' Judges Use Their Save - Tom Woolf Survives After 'Babylon' Performance

American Idol Randy Jackson Jennifer Lopez Chris Daughtry Goo Goo Dolls

There are no more second chances left for the remaining contestants on American Idol after the judges decided to use their save on Thursday night (3rd April). After strong performances on the previous show, it was certainly going to be an evening of drama and possible dissent amongst the judges.

Randy Jackson
Randy Jackson correctly predicted the five to gain the public's support and not enter the bottom three.

However, eight contestants are still remaining after the judges were unable to decide who should be eliminated when the bottom three - Malaya Watson, Sam Woolf and C.J. Harris - battled it out to remain in the competition.

American Idol Results Night: Who Went Home And Why?

American Idol Keith Urban

And then there were ten. Ten American Idol finalists, that is. It’s getting to be that time in the competition, when the hearts of the remaining Idol hopefuls just don’t seem to be in it (at least for now). If you've somehowe managed to avoid spoilers thus far, be warned: SPOILERS BELOW, So, so many of them. It came as no surprise when the bottom three – terrible word choice, by the way – was named as: Sam Wolfe, Ben Briley and Majesty Rose. And the winner, pardon, loser is… Ben Briley.

Ben Briley, American Idol Finalists Party
Sorry Ben, much like a Katherine Heigl movie, it just wasn't meant to be.

Briley’s name coming up wasn’t really a surprise after his performance during Wednesday movie night. Passing off Bennie and the Jets as a Song from the Cinema was more than a bit of a stretch. Yes, it was featured on the 27 Dresses soundtrack, but come on! In any case, the judges didn’t buy it and neither did the audience.

American Idol Jennifer Lopez Keith Urban Harry Connick Jr. Nigel Lythgoe

American Idol will be back for its thirteenth season on Tuesday, 14 January, with an (almost) entirely new judging panel holding down the reins for the long-running singing contest. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. aren't the only new things to come out of the latest season of Idol either, as the new season may also mark the move from West to East Coast for the show.

After twelve years in the City of Angels, the show may be moving to the newly refurbished Madison Square Garden in New York City for its conclusive episodes, with the last two instalments of the thirteenth season scheduled for 20 and 21 May.

So, Is American Idol's Justin Guarini Living In Poverty Or Not?

Justin Guarini American Idol Kelly Clarkson

Justin Guarini has elaborated on his emotional open letter in which he claimed to skip meals in order to feed his children. The singer, who finished as runner-up in the first season of American Idol, has criticized the media for its coverage of the note.

"Obviously you completely missed the point of my letter @peoplemag," tweeted the 34-year-old father of two on Friday, "News isn't news anymore, and I'm nowhere near poverty. #twistedmytruth"

In his original letter, Guarini said he spent "days skipping meals in order to make sure I have enough. To make sure my children and my wife have enough." Which is...well, crystal clear. Justin Guarini doesn't have enough money to feed himself.

Jennifer Lopez Randy Jackson American Idol Simon Cowell Britain's Got Talent Mariah Carey Keith Urban

Jennifer Lopez gave UK viewers of Simon Cowell's Britains Got Talent a real eyeful on Tuesday night, performing her new single 'Live It Up' while wearing a skimpy black leotard that barely covered her famous behind. Twitter immediately sprang into action, with some parents concerned about the "inappropriate" nature of her performance on what is considered a family show, with some young children actually performing.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for TV regualtor Ofcom said, "Ofcom can confirm that it has received complaints about the Britain's Got Talent broadcast last night, which we are assessing but not currently investigating." One viewer on Twitter said, "BGT does #jenniferlopez realise it's a family show - only thing missing was the pole - cover up your cheeks please!" though judge Simon Cowell was pretty happy with how things went, telling Lopez, "Seriously, J-Lo. If anyone wants to know how you do it. That's how you do it,' he said. "Seriously world class."

For what it's worth, Lopez herself seemed pretty oblivious to any concerns and happily posted an Instagram of the R&B star being held up by various dancers. "Thanks @GotTalent for a great night #liveitup," she added.

American Idol Hasn't Called Keith Urban Yet, (Do You Want To Tell Him, Or Should We?)

Keith Urban American Idol Mariah Carey Nicki Minaj Randy Jackson Jennifer Lopez

Keith Urban says he is still awaiting his fate on American Idol and remains in the dark of producer's plans for the new season. Urban has been a popular and inoffensive judge on the show for season twelve, though industry sources suggest Fox are planning a complete overhaul of the show for season thirteen.

"I have no official information of anything. I'm pretty much in the same boat as everybody else here with the rumors that have been floating around," Urban told the Associated Press, "I don't know anything more about what's happening next season. It was like this before I signed on . . . so it's not unusual for the Idol folks to be in this place of figuring out what they want to do, then they always pull it together." Last week, E! News reported that Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson and Urban would be replaced by Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert and possibly Aiken. American Idol producers were left red-faced midway through season twelve after it emerged they had tried to replace Mariah with previous judge Jennifer Lopez following dwindling viewer ratings. Carey's legal team blocked any such thing from happening.

We assume Urban wouldn't be too fussed should Idol bosses want to take the show in a different direction. His new album Fuse will hit shelves on September 10, 2013 and he'll head out on a huge tour in mid-July. Oh, and he's married to Nicole Kidman. So...

Keith Urban Plans New Album While He Waits On His American Idol Future

Keith Urban American Idol

Country star Keith Urban might not be on the next season of American Idol, but at least he's not dwelling too much on it because in the meantime the singer has announced that he's heading into the studio for a new album. The singer plans to bring out the work-in-progress Fuse, the follow-up to 2010's Get Closer, in September this year. He didn't get specific on the date, but did seem fairly confident of a fall release.

The singer revealed the news on Tuesday (May 28) to USA Today, detailing the album name and release details in a statement that said he is finding the album-making-process as a "liberating" and "creative" one. He went on to say, "I don't know why that is, because I've always been fortunate enough to make the records I want to make. I think just working with other people has just been a really enjoyable thing."

Urban went on to discuss the album layout, estimating that the album will feature up to 16 songs, and collaborators. He will be teaming up with the more pop-friendly production techniques of Butch Walker on some songs, as well as regular studio-whiz Nathan Chapman and a selection of other well-known country producers.

One Show's Dip Is Another Show's Success: The Ratings Are In For TV's Big Finale Week

American Idol Kerry Washington Steve Carell

The ratings from TV finale week are in and, as you might expect, it’s looking good for the last ever (tear) episode of The Office and CBS’s Scandal, while good ol’ American Idol takes its deepest plunge yet. According to USA Today, the singing competition, which crowned Candice Glover as the winner, drew in only 14.3 million viewers for Fox, less than half of its peak audience of 36+ million, who tuned in to the 2005 finale. At this point things are looking bleak for Idol, which is even trailing behind CBS’s Big Bang Theory. That show broadcast to 14.8 million. Some frontrunners in the newcomer category included ABC’s political drama Scandal, starring Kerry Washington. The series managed to draw in 9.1 million for its second season finale.

And last but not least of course there was The Office. The much beloved sitcom has never quite had a viewership on the scale of a talent competition. Still, with its extended 75-minute finale, which saw the return of Steve Carell and prompted a lot of nostalgia, The Office bowed out with 5.7 million people watching. All in all, though, it’s been an underwhelming season for television. Perhaps online productions of the kind Netflix has been working on this past year really are the way forward.

Big Bang Theory Cast, Choice Awards
The almost identical ratings, which spell doom for Idol, mean that BBT is flying high.

Awkward: Did Aretha Franklin Already Know The 'American Idol' Result?

Aretha Franklin American Idol Ryan Seacrest Candice Glover

Err, shooting into first place for the most awkward piece of television for 2013, it's Aretha Franklin telling everyone who won American Idolseason twelve before the result was officially announced! Appearing via satellite from New York for the season finale of Idol - which pitted Kree Harrison versus Candice Glover - Franklin appeared to spoil the result, saying, "Candice, you're a winner," from a huge screen in the Nokia Theater.

The audience were confused - had Aretha just told everyone who had won? Candice fans cheered, Kree fans fell silent. After an excruciating pause, the Queen of Soul added, "Win or lose - you're a winner," - which makes absolutely no sense to anyone.

The whole car-crash led host Ryan Seacrest to nervously ask Franklin whether she had the results. "I do," Franklin answered, "but I won't tell you." But she did tell everyone. She told everyone that Candice Glover had won. Which is actually what she went on to do.
