American Pie star Jason Biggs and his wife Jenny Mollen have taken steps to store their newborn son's stem cells in the hope they can one day be used to save a life.

The couple became first-time parents to baby Sid on 15 February (14) and Biggs has since revealed they have teamed up with medics at the Cryo-Cell blood bank facility to store the umbilical cord blood from their child's birth.

They have provided a testimony for the company's website, on which they state, "We may joke a lot in life, but all kidding aside, when we learned the facts about how stem cells from cord blood and cord tissue can be used to possibly save lives, hell yeah we stored.

"And knowing that our baby's stem cells might be used for our whole family made the decision that much easier. We hope we never have to use them, but it is a definite relief to know it's there and stored safe at Cryo-Cell."

Stem cells can be used later in life to help treat the child and possibly their relatives for certain illnesses where they can be used to repair faulty cells or organs.
