Father Bids Emotional Farewell To Winehouse
Amy Winehouse's heartbroken father Mitch bid a poignant farewell to the tragic singer at her funeral on Tuesday (26Jul11), telling mourners she had been happy in the days before her death.
The Rehab hitmaker was cremated in London following a private service for family and close friends, and Mitch read a moving eulogy in which he praised his daughter's spirit in battling her personal problems.
He also told mourners he had spoken to her in the days before her death on Saturday (23Jul11), insisting she was positive about the future.
Mitch said, "Knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better."
He also raised a smile among guests when he recalled a number of amusing stories from Winehouse's childhood. The service ended with mourners joining in a rendition of the singer's favourite song, So Far Away by Carole King.
Family spokesman Chris Goodman says, "So Far Away was her favourite song. Mitch encouraged people to sing to it which they did. There were plenty of anecdotes. There were prayers, meditation, Mitch's eulogy and then more prayers.
"Mitch was funny, he told some jokes about her childhood and how headstrong she was. A lot of the family members recognised the stories and laughed along. Mitch stressed many times that she was happier now than she had been in many years. He spoke a lot about her fantastic recovery."
Guests at the funeral included rocker Bryan Adams, Kelly Osbourne, Mark Ronson, Winehouse's goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, and members of her band, including backing singers Heshima and Zalon Thompson.
