Edward is a young boy who lives with his mum and dad at their home which they've converted into a retirement home. Edwards mum is always busy working running the home, whilst his father is battling a mid-life crisis. Edward doesn't have many friends, he keeps himself to himself and very infrequently goes out and plays with any of his school friends. He develops a fascination with the afterlife, attempting to capture the sound of a soul leaving the body, he aimlessly follows around some of the old residents with a tape-recorder.

A change in Edwards personality takes place when a new occupant of the home arrives. Clarence is a retired magician, never one to stick to the rules and especially since the death of his wife he manages to make a reputation for himself as quite an anarchic character.

The unlikely pair become great friends and both learn valuable lessons about life, Clarence comes to terms with his past and Edward discovers he doesn't have to be afraid of what his future might hold.
