True Grit is a 1968 Western book by author Charles Portis, Ethan & Joel Coen now lend the story and re-work it into a film adaptation. They are not the first directors to turn this book into a film as it was also attempted by Henry Hathaway in 1969 and starred John Wayne.

The film follows a little girl named Mattie who wishes to avenge the death of her father. Mattie knows exactly who killed her father but must now find someone to accompany her on her quest. As she searches for the appropriate partner, she finds an aging town marshal named Rooster Cogburn despite his clear addiction to alcohol, Mattie feels Cogburn is the right man for the job and he agrees to help track done the wanted man. On their journey they meet a Texas Ranger who's also searching for the man as he apparently killed a senator. Together the three very different folks move across the country to hunt down the fugitive.
