Michael Kovak is a young man who's studying to become a priest, his faith is strong but he's not convinced in demonic possession, instead he believes people who claim to be possessed should be treated for psychosis by a doctor. Still unable to truly believe in what the he's being taught, Kovak attends an exorcism school at the Vatican.

Whilst there he learns the Vatican receives over half a million reports of demonic possession a year and though some of the reports might only be stories some are unexplainable and untreatable through conventional medical methods. Whilst in Rome Kovak is taken in by an unorthodox priest Father Lucas who shows him a darker side to their faith and together they discover just how strong the devils power is, even in one of the holiest places in the world.
