Puss in Boots first appeared in Shrek, sent by Princess' Fiona's father King Harold to kill the ogre; however, he fails in doing this and instead becomes friends with Shrek and in particular with Donkey, helping them and their friends on various quests around the kingdom of Far Far Away.

But before he became a famous ogre assassin and before he met Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, he was a swashbuckling outlaw who was once childhood best friends with mastermind Humpty Dumpty.

Meeting up with Humpty Dumpty years later, Puss finds out Humpty is planning what could be the greatest heist of his life: a plot to steal the famous Goose that lays the Golden Eggs. The two join forces with Kitty Softpaws, a street-smart cat whose swordplay rivals that of Puss himself. Along the way, they must stop evil outlaws Jack and Jill, who are out to destroy the world.

Dreamworks' latest animation is a spin-off from their successful Shrek series, featuring the loveable cat. Originally meant to be a straight-to-DVD release in 2006, it was decided in 2008 that Puss in Boots would be given a theatrical release and an original storyline, to avoid overlap with the Shrek films, in particular, the most recent Shrek, "Shrek Forever After".
