In 16th century France, wars were raging between the Catholics and the Protestants. Heiress Marie de M'ziSres is forced into marriage by her father, the Marquis de M'ziSres to a man she has never met, Prince Philippe de Montpesier. Marie refuses at first, because she's in love with her handsome childhood friend, Henri de Guise.

Soon after her forced marriage, her new husband Philippe is called to fight. Fearing for her safety, he sends Marie to one of his castles, Champigny, to be looked after by his friend, Count Chabannes. Philippe wants Marie to complete her education under the count so that one day, she can take her place in court. However, the count soon falls for Marie too.

Soon after she becomes isolated at Champigny, Marie is joined by Guise, who she is still in love with. Along with Guise, the Duke of Anjou - who is the future Henri III - also turns up and he, too, falls in love with Marie, sparking a violent rivalry between the four men as they fight for Marie's affections.
