Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew meet at Edinburgh University and graduate on July 15th, 1988. On the same day, they spend a chaste night together and begin a friendship that will last for the rest of their lives.

Over the next 20 years and every July 15th, key moments in Emma and Dexter's relationship are revealed. While Emma starts working in a terrible Tex-Mex restaurant in London while struggling to become a writer, Dexter develops a successful TV show and seems to be going from strength to strength.

Emma and Dexter see other people outside of their platonic relationship - Ian and Sylvie, respectively. Meanwhile, while Emma realises her ambitions as a teacher and then later a bestselling author, Dexter becomes hooked on drugs and alcohol, his TV career collapses and his now wife Sylvie ends up divorcing him. When the two old friends meet up in Paris in 2001, it is discovered that Emma, too, has been unlucky in love.

Throughout the course of their friendship, Dexter and Emma continually question their friendship and whether it was right that they chose not to be lovers and discover that what they're ultimately looking for in life may be closer than they thought.
