In a grand castle located in the beautiful countryside, Justine and Michael have married. They enter their reception to cheers and applause and everyone agrees that Justine has never looked happier or more beautiful. The newlyweds enjoy their new marital status and the company of their guests, which include Justine's sister Claire and her husband, John, who organised and paid for the entire wedding.

Upon seeing a red star in the night sky, Justine becomes depressed and unwell. The red star is soon eclipsed by a rogue planet named Melancholia, which is set to fly by Earth. In the days leading up to the fly by, Justine becomes more depressed and her relationship with Claire becomes increasingly strained.

Claire's husband John is eager to see Melancholia and Earth pass by each other and sets up a telescope in the castle grounds. Claire and her son Leo, however, are less than excited, with both mother and son thinking that Melancholia will hit Earth and destroy it. To the horror of everyone, it turns out that this is the case and in Earth's final moments, Claire suddenly finds herself keeping a deadly secret, while trying to mend her broken relationship with Justine.
