As a child, Michael and his father Charles have had a tense relationship. Charles would lash out at Michael for breaking the rules; once even attempting to hit him with a baseball bat when he intervened in a fight between Charles and his wife Lisa. Another time, Charles was made to walk home in the rain after claiming to have lost his glasses.

Several years later, Michael has moved out and Charles and Lisa are preparing to go to her sister Jane's house when tragedy strikes, leaving Lisa dead, Jane and her children devastated and Charles feeling guilty.

Michael returns for the funeral but finds it impossible to reconcile with his father. Charles' ex-wife Kelly also shows up, much to the disapproval of Jane. Michael vents his frustration by writing about the relationship between his mother, his father and himself. But talking to friends of his mother's unearths some home truths about Lisa that Michael would rather not know about and that could possibly destroy what little remains of the father and son relationship.
