Arthur Kipps is a young yet successful lawyer who loves his work. One day, he is asked to travel to a small, remote village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased client. However, it does mean leaving his young son behind. Arthur is reluctant to leave his son but he does so anyway.

His former client lived in an old house, called Eel Marsh House. Arthur is curious at first at why the villagers avoid the house. He enters the house on his own and begins his investigation. He unearths horrifying tales from the town's gruesome history, including one tale about a mysterious 'woman in black'.

But Arthur's adventure is only just beginning. The children of the village start to go missing under odd circumstances, leaving the villagers anxious and frightened. Arthur becomes involved when those close to him start being threatened, forcing him to quickly try and stop the destructive acts of the woman in black.
