Ethan Brand is the frontman of a once successful shabby rock band who is slowly on the decline. One night, the band is preparing to go on stage when a former groupie, Mary Ann, shows up unexpectedly. Ethan recognises her straightaway and assumes she has come for sex.

To everyone's surprise, though, Mary Ann reveals that she has a thirteen year old daughter, Janie, who was fathered by none other than Ethan. Mary Ann declares that she can't look after Janie anymore and leaves her in Ethan's disbelieving care. He takes the matter to court, where it is confirmed that Janie really is Ethan's daughter.

Soon afterwards, Ethan is involved in a scuffle with a band mate, which in turn leads to the band getting dropped from the record label and splitting up. Ethan struggles to revive his career as a musician, until Janie steps in to help. Together, the father and daughter bond over a passion for music and singing together and Ethan has to admit that Janie is the best thing that's happened to him.
