Doug Glatt is a pleasant pub bouncer who's a little bit dim. He feels left out in his home life; his brother and father are both doctors. Doug has a best friend, Pat, who seems to spend a lot of his time drunk.

One day, Doug and Pat go to a hockey match. Pat is, as usual, wasted and decides to torment a player from the visiting team. This is a bad move; the player climbs into the stands to face off to the pair and in defence of his friend, Doug punches the hockey player hard.

His punching abilities do not go unnoticed but unexpectedly, it isn't a security guard who takes note: it's the hockey coach of the home team, the Halifax Highlanders, who are doing badly in the league.

The coach approaches Doug with an unusual job offer: their star player, Xavier Laflamme needs a goon to protect him from opposing players - and Doug would be the perfect candidate for the job. He accepts his place on the team; he even gets to choose his own number (69, as suggested by Pat).

Doug is a hit on the team and the Halifax Highlanders soon find themselves going from strength to strength in the big league. But trouble looms again when he finds himself up against an opposing goon, Rhea, who is determined to see his long, violent career out with a bang, by putting paid to Doug.
