One Direction (2010-present)
One Direction are a British boyband who appeared in the 2010 series of talent show 'The X Factor'. The band members are Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.

Formation: Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik auditioned as solo singers in the seventh series of 'The X Factor'. They failed to make it through to live shows individually, and so were put together as One Direction by the judges. While they finished third, they signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Records.

Career: One Direction topped the UK charts with their debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful' in 2011 and subsequently signed with America's Columbia Records. They supported Big Time Rush during their first tour of the US, and their 2012 album 'Up All Night' became the first British group to top US charts with a debut album. During that year, they went through a courtcase (which they subsequently won) after being sued for having the same name as another band in the US.

That year the band performed their debut single at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London.

One Direction recorded their second album 'Take Me Home' in Stockholm, and released it in 2012 alongside the number one singles 'Live While We're Young' and 'Little Things', the latter of which they performed at the Royal Variety Performance.

In 2013, they released a mash-up of 'One Way or Another' and 'Teenage Kicks' for Comic Relief, during which time they went to Ghana as volunteers at a hospital.

That year their documentary movie 'One Direction: This Is Us' was released, directed by Morgan Spurlock, and became the fourth highest grossing concert movie. They also unveiled their album 'Midnight Memories' featuring lead single 'Best Song Ever'. They are the first British band to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 with its first three albums.

In 2014, they released 'One Direction: Where We Are - The Concert Film' and an autobiography entitled 'Who We Are', followed by their album 'Four'.

In 2015, it was announced that Zayn Malik had left the band. They later released the first single from their fifth album, 'Drag Me Down', and announced that they were planning a hiatus to explore solo career paths.

Styles originally said he'd be moving in for just a couple of weeks, with a house he wanted to move into nearby needing some work before he started living there, according to a Rolling Stone interview with Winston last year. However, the pop star ended up sleeping on a mattress in the attic for 20 months.

Horan has quit Syco to pursue his solo career with Capitol Records.

Niall Horan has risked incurring the wrath of Simon Cowell by quitting the music mogul’s record label Syco, the imprint to which his former group One Direction are signed, for a new deal on Capitol Records.

It’s a bold move for Horan, parting ways with the person who discovered him on ‘The X Factor’ all those years ago, but it’s one that other members of the group have already done in pursuit of their own solo careers over the last year or so.

He’s been variously linked to the likes of Taylor Swift, Caroline Flack and Cara Delevingne over the years, but Harry Styles has now revealed that he hasn’t dated anybody in over a year, thanks to his hectic schedule as he prepares to launch his solo singing career.

The 23 year old One Direction singer has been comparatively quiet compared to his bandmates in the 16 months since the band officially went on their hiatus at the end of 2015. However, he revealed that virtually none of that time was spent on his love life, as he’s been too busy focussing on his solo album and his role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming World War II epic Dunkirk.

“It was a control thing,” he told The Times this week. “Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled, it was the one area where I could say, ‘No, I’m not eating that’. Once I got over the control, the eating just came back into place, super naturally.”
