The Three Stooges is a comic caper, following the lives of three men who were left on the doorstep of an orphanage when they were babies. This updated version of the 1930s vaudeville act of the same name sees the familiar characters of Larry, Moe and Curly try to save their childhood orphanage from closure. In the process, they become embroiled in a bizarre murder plot, as well as finding themselves somehow starring in a phenomenally successful reality TV show.
The film, from the prolific filmmakers, the Farrelly Brothers, centres on a stream of physical gags and slapstick comedy that was popularised in the mid-20th Century. The Farrelly Brothers first made their name with the Jim Carrey comedy vehicle Dumb and Dumber and have been responsible for a number of highly-regarded comedies such as There's Something About Mary and Shallow Hal. Peter and Bobby Farrelly are both credited as the film's directors, as well as getting production and writing credits. Mike Cerrone joins them as a writer, having worked with the brothers previously on Me Myself and Irene. Meanwhile, the production team was joined by Bradley Thomas and Charles B. Wessler - both regular contributors to the Farrelly Brothers' movies.
The film is based on three comic characters that were created in America, in 1925, by Ted Healy. In 1930, they starred in their first feature length film, released by the Fox Film Corporation, entitled Soup to Nuts.
