Nick Fury is the director of law enforcement and espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D, which deals with superhuman threats. One day, an unexpected enemy targets global security and safety. The enemy turns out to be Loki, who was banished from Asgard. This is made known to Nick, who decides to assemble a team of the world's strongest superheroes to tackle this problem.

After searching the globe, he soon has his team: Tony Stark; Steve Rogers; Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff, or, as they are respectively known: Iron Man; Captain America; Hulk and the Black Widow. Nick also recruits the Norse God Thor, who is the older brother of Loki.

Initially, the team of superheroes do not get along. Tony, in particular, is unhappy at having to work with a team, insisting he works alone. But New York is subjected to a series of increasingly devastating disasters - it turns out that, in his bid to conquer the Earth, Loki has also planned an alien invasion. The world changes for the worse, leaving the fate of Planet Earth hanging in the balance and it is up to Earth's greatest superheroes - who call themselves The Avengers - to save it.

The Avengers is written and directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer; The Cabin In The Woods, which also stars Chris Hemsworth) and is based on characters created by Stan Lee, who will make a cameo appearance in the film, as he has done in previous Marvel films.
