Beth and Joseph Winter have been married for several years but lately, she feels that he is growing more distant from her and more absorbed in his work as a surgeon. Everything changes, though, when Beth spots a stray dog on the side of the freeway. After persuading her daughter to back up, Beth decides to adopt the dog and names him Freeway.

For a year, Freeway becomes part of everyday life. Beth dotes on him and even Joseph finds himself growing attached to the dog. One day, Joseph takes Freeway for a walk but, while walking him through the forest near their home, he gets a phone call about work. Joseph is so engrossed in the call that he doesn't notice Freeway running off until it's too late.

Beth is distraught when her husband delivers the bad news; she immediately assembles a search team that consists of Joseph's sister; her new boyfriend and Joseph's nephew. They are joined by a psychic, Carmen, who tries to help them by suggesting that Freeway might still be in the woods. Will Beth and Joseph find Freeway and grow closer as a result?
