In 1752, The Collins family moves from Liverpool for a new life in North America. Barnabas, the son of the family, grows up and soon earns a reputation as a playboy. One day, his antics break the heart of a young woman, Angelique. She reveals her true nature to Barnabas - she is really a witch! She curses Barnabas and turns him into a vampire, burying him alive.

Barnabas manages to free himself some time later. He asks the first person he sees what year it is, the answer being 1972. Barnabas encounters a lot of unwelcome changes - there are no horse and carriages; 'tiny songstresses' seem to be trapped in small boxes (known as televisions to you and me) and, perhaps worst of all, his old manor has fallen into disrepair but is still inhabited.

The new residents aren't too thrilled when Barnabas lets himself in and casually joins them at the dinner table. They aren't pleased, either, when he makes himself at home. But Barnabas offers to help their failing family business, which they take him up on. As he throws himself into work, Barnabas is disturbed by the return of someone he thought had died long, long ago.
