Musical career: Charli XCX's first album, '14', was given away to attendees at her earliest gigs, which happened to be illegal raves. She signed to Asylum
Records in 2010 and gained recognition for her singles 'Stay Away' and 'Nuclear Seasons' in 2011.
In 2012, she released two mixtapes - 'Heartbreaks and Earthquakes' and 'Super Ultra' - and toured alongside Santigold and Coldplay.
After co-writing 'I Love It', Icona Pop brought the track to number one, thrusting both artists into mainstream attention.
Her major label debut was 2013's 'True Romance' and the following year she released 'Sucker' which featured the singles 'Boom Clap' (which appeared in the movie 'The Fault in Our Stars'), 'Break the Rules' and 'Doing It' featuring Rita Ora. She had initially released the single 'SuperLove', before it was decided that it wouldn't appear on the album.
In 2014, she appeared on Iggy Azalea's chart-topping single 'Fancy'. That year she was also announced to support Katy Perry on her Prismatic World Tour.
In 2015, Charli embarked on her own Sucker World Tour, and announced that she would accompany Jack Antonoff and his band Bleachers on a co-headlining tour of the US.
Personal life: Though born in Cambridge, Charli XCX grew up in Hertfordshire and went to Bishop's Stortford College.
She has been writing music since the age of 14 and has the condition sound-to-colour synaesthesia, which means she sees music in terms of colour.

Our pick of the bunch for March brings us one debut album, one long awaited return and three more riveting selections from three distinctly different artists
The arrival of spring brings with it a plethora of fresh releases from artists both new and old. Marillion are back with their 20th studio album - An Hour Before It's Dark, Stereophonics return with their 12th studio album - Oochya! and Dolly Parton is set to release her 48th, yes 48th, album - Run, Rose, Run. Sonic Youth have a rarities album coming called - In/Out/In and Bryan Adams follows up 2019's Shine A Light with his latest full length record - So Happy It Hurts. Machine Gun Kelly is dropping his sixth studio album - Mainstream Sellout, Sky Ferreira is reportedly going to share Masochism, her long awaited, frequently delayed, second album and Jamaican Reggae sensation Koffee will release her aptly titled debut full length album - Gifted. As good as they are, and some of them are very good, they didn't make our final five favourites. Here's who did...
Musicians are not only cancelling their tours this year, they're also taking steps to self-quarantine as the virus continues to spread. Charli XCX has expressed her frustration over the isolation, while Blink 182's Mark Hoppus has revealed that his family's "no-one in, no-one out" policy has already incited cabin fever on the first day.

Best song: Bad Guy
Without doubt the most sonically extraordinary album of this year, 18-year-old Billie Eilish's debut album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' has united both pop lovers and alternative listeners thanks to its experimental yet infectious ethos. It's naive yet poignant, fun yet deeply unsettling with themes of bravado, drugs, love, climate change and heartbreak woven throughout the poetic lyrics. There's no-one quite like Billie.

Charli XCX - Charli Album Review
By Max Cussons in Music Reviews on 20 September 2019
Charli XCX is a name you'll have almost definitely heard due to her huge pop hits such as 'Boys', 'After The Afterparty' and 'I Love It' with Icona Pop. Aside from her mainstream success, she's actually come out with some of the most forward-thinking, fresh pop records of the decade. 2016's 'Vroom Vroom' EP kickstarted this, seeing Charli team up with mind-bending, pop futurist producer SOPHIE, and following that with 2017's 'Number 1 Angel' and 'Pop 2' mixtapes on which she collaborated with various producers from the similarly innovative PC Music label.
'Next Level Charli' opens the record with lots of sparkle, pumping adrenaline as dazzling keys and ethereal airiness build up, Charli rapping in her in-your-face pace. There's plenty of rich escapism in the lyrics too, Charli talking about her fast life, with plenty of pedal-to-the-metal imagery.

Charli XCX Defends Rita Ora's Controversial 'Girls' Record
By Holly Mosley in Music / Festivals on 29 May 2018
The song has been slammed by a large proportion of the LGBT community.
The women of the LGBT community have reacted with fury over Rita Ora's new song 'Girls', featuring Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, because of its depiction of female same-sex relationships. Charli XCX has responded to the backlash in a recent interview, defending her collaborator over her choice of song.
The outrage has been over the stereotypical girl-on-girl lyrics, including the suggestion of a threesome with a man and that the protaganist has been stoned and drunk while engaging in lesbian trysts. It's, frankly, a harmful exploration of such a relationship that panders to the male fantasy rather than any kind of realistic love affair.
