Armando spends most of his time dancing around the streets of New York to the music blaring in his iPod. He even dances during his janitorial work, pretending the mop is his dance partner. He soon starts dance lessons under the tutelage of an experienced dancer called Andrew.

One day, Armando is practising in front of a mirror in the dance studio, when he notices Andrews' dance partner, Mia, watching. Although embarrassed at first, Armando soon begins practising ballroom dancing with her and he quickly becomes smitten.

Unfortunately, his mother does not approve of this and tries fervently to set Armando up with Rosa, who is also a dancer. Armando, however, doesn't have feelings for Rosa and so constantly rebuffs his mother's attempts at matchmaking.

Things take a sudden turn for the worse when Mia is involved in a horrific car accident that leaves her wheelchair bound for life. Armando starts spending more and more time with her and encourages her to enter a Wheelchair Ballroom competition with him. Despite her reluctance, she warms to the idea and the two get practising.
