RuPaul Apologises For Transgender Drag Queen Comments

By Daniel Falconer in Movies / TV / Theatre on 06 March 2018

RuPaul

The host of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' has stepped back on comments that upset the transgender drag queen community.

It's hard work representing an entire community on one of the biggest platforms the world has to offer, and that's something RuPaul found out all over again this week when comments he made in an interview suggested that he would only ever have biological males compete on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' in the future.

Clear in his approach to casting the series, which features a bunch of drag queens all fighting it out for a cash prize and the title of "America's Next Drag Superstar", RuPaul claimed that the art of drag was a kick in the teeth to male-dominated culture. Rejecting masculinity at its most toxic seemed to have been the aim of his comments, but they were taken to mean that no transgender women would ever be allowed to compete.

Winning? Is Amanda Bynes 'Doing A Charlie Sheen?'

By Michael West in Lifestyle / Showbiz on 04 June 2013

Can Amanda Bynes' apparent meltdown really be compared to Charlie Sheen's famous behavior?

Amanda Bynes latest Twitter rant was levelled squarely at drag queen RuPaul, whom the television star described as being as ugly as her father. Bynes had begun the day by referring to writers at People magazine as "faggots," saying, ""Um, Peoplemag Hello? I'm not lost and alone! W H A T T H E F * C K A R E Y O U T A L K I N G A B O U T ? Follow me on twitter you faggots!"

Though she quickly deleted the tweet, RuPaul caught a glimpse of it, replying, "Derogatory slurs are ALWAYS an outward projection of a person's own poisonous self-loathing @AmandaBynes." Of course, Amanda took the bait and responded to RuPaul with a wave of abuse, saying, "My dad is as ugly as RuPaul! So thankful I look nothing like you both! I had nose surgery after my mug shots so my nose and I are gorgeous!"

RuPaul is known for her strong stance on derogatory slurs and told the Huffington Post's Gay Voices last year, "[I]n the ACT UP age we called ourselves queers because we earned the right, we took the word back. But in reality, once you go even deeper, you know, you have to come from intent. And black folks call themselves the n-word all the time. It's because the intent is coming from a place of love. If the intent is coming from a place of hatred, that's different"

Sahara Davenport, star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has died. Huffington Post have reported on the news, after rumors of his death began to surface today (October 2, 2012). Details of Davenport’s death have yet to be released, though the news that he has passed away has been confirmed by several people close to him, including RuPaul and the Drag Race judge Michelle Visage.

The Logo Network, who screen Drag Race, released a statement to say “Logo is profoundly saddened by the passing of Antoine Ashley who fans around the world knew and loved as Sahara Davenport. He was an amazing artist and entertainer who'll be deeply missed by his Logo family. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, especially his boyfriend Karl, in their time of need.” Wikipedia lists Davenport’s age as 27 but according to Huffington Post, he may actually have been 32, as a New York Times piece dated from 2009 said that he was 29 at the time.

In that interview, Davenport explained why he had moved to New York, to find fame and fortune: “I had to build my name here by doing talent nights, talent competitions and networking and meeting all the working girls and figure out how to work this animal of New York City. The New York scene is so much bigger than in Dallas.” On Twitter, RuPaul played tribute to Antoine by saying “Shocked & heartbroken over @SaharaDavenport. Never occurred to me that we'd ever lose one of my girls. I see them as immortal.
