Madonna Justifies "Black Muslim" Comment As Sarcasm

Madonna can't perform a live show without making a staunch political statement, this much we know, but her recent comments, whilst unequivocal in her support of Obama, have caused controversy. But the Iconic singer claims her misplaced words were purely sarcastic, reports The Guardian.

"Now, it's so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House," she said to audience members at the Verizon Centre in downtown Washington. "We have a black Muslim in the White House . it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man." Now, Obama is not Muslim, but Madge claims she knew that: "I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim - though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were? The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don't care what religion Obama is - nor should anyone else in America," she said.

She's got previous for making contentious comments in front of a live audience. As recently as July, she got herself in trouble with France's far-right Front National party after screening footage of its leader, Marine Le Pen, with a swastika superimposed on her face. The Front National has threatened to sue the star. And in August, she used the Russian leg of her tour to speak out against gay rights in the country and come out in support of recently convicted band Pussy Riot.
