CAUTION: Plot spoilers for 'The Last Jedi'

Mark Hamill has revealed that he “doesn’t care” whether or not he makes a return to the Star Wars franchise, after Luke Skywalker was killed off at the end of The Last Jedi.

The question of whether Hamill’s iconic film character would be appearing in the upcoming ninth instalment of the Star Wars series has been consuming fan forums, with the possibility of Luke Skywalker returning as a kind of ‘Force Ghost’ being raised as a possibility.

Hamill himself remained tight-lipped about that prospect in an interview just a few weeks ago, but now he’s seemingly had a change of heart, telling ABC News this week that he’s lost interest in ever coming back to Star Wars, particularly after Harrison Ford’s Han Solo was killed off in The Force Awakens, as well as the death of co-star Carrie Fisher.

Mark Hamill Wants To Return As "Frightening Force Ghost" In 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

Mark Hamill has some interesting ideas surrounding a potential return for Luke Skywalker to the 'Star Wars' universe.

Mark Hamill has some big plans for Luke Skywalker if he's to make a return to the 'Star Wars' episodic series. When we last saw the character, he was seen to be sacrificing his life in 'The Last Jedi' to save those who could go on and fight the First Order. Whilst many think he'll make a miraculous recovery somehow, it would seem that the Jedi Master truly has been wiped out, taking his leave in a similar vein to that of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Despite that, we have seen some of the most iconic 'Star Wars' characters make a comeback as Force Ghosts. That could serve as a vehicle for Luke to also make his return, and Hamill seems to be on board. He doesn't think Luke should remain cool, calm, and collected presence however.

Mark Hamill Reveals His Top Pick For Casting A Young Luke Skywalker

Could we see a much younger version of Luke Skywalker in the future?

Mark Hamill has been one of the biggest stars to come from the 'Star Wars' universe ever since it first hit the big screen with its initial episodic trilogy. Playing Luke Skywalker, he lead the sci-fi genre for a number of years before seemingly hanging up his Jedi robes in 'Return of the Jedi'. Over three decades later however, and Hamill would make his return in last year's 'The Last Jedi', following a small scene in 'The Force Awakens' back in 2015.

Though his return may have been a short-lived one, as his time in the film series seemed to come to a definitive end in 'The Last Jedi', Hamill's presence, and of course that of Skywalker, is one that will be felt into the far future. But, could we see the character make a return in a completely different form? An origins story, perhaps?

Mark Hamill "Refuses To Believe" Luke Skywalker's Fate In 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

The actor says he hopes Luke actually "teleported" rather than passing away.

Many of the events that took place in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' were controversial for audiences, and one of the most shocking moments came when we saw Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) seemingly exit the series for good. Though he made a big return at the beginning of the film, found in his self-imposed exile by Rey (Daisy Ridley) and brought back into the action, it doesn't look like Luke will be starring in the ninth episodic instalment of the 'Star Wars' series next year.

Causing a distraction that would allow the Resistance to escape an attack, Luke created a hologram of himself to fight Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but in doing so, audiences saw his physical being disappear. The only thing left behind when all was said and done were Luke's robes, which blew off in the wind, leaving the majority of viewers to come to the conclusion that Luke had died.
