Jennifer Lawrence Defends Meryl Streep Golden Globe Comment

  • 17 January 2013

Calm down everyone, Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t being disrespectful to Meryl Streep at all when she accepted her Golden Globe at the weekend. We all know this, you all know this really, let’s just stop getting worked up about it. Especially you, Lindsay Lohan.

The perennially stupid Lindsay Lohan seemed to get pretty upset, when Lawrence accepted her award for Best Actress In A Motion Picture Comedy Or Musical and subsequently said "Look, it says, 'I beat Meryl.' " Lohan – who was in court for the 20th time in eight years this week – Tweeted "no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep." Sure thing Linds. Nevertheless, her ire managed to spread around the internet, forcing Lawrence into a pretty needless explanation.

"Yeah, it was a quote from First Wives Club," she told David Letterman, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Bette Midler was talking about a Globe. I can't believe nobody's ever done it before, but she says, 'Looks what it says, it says "I beat Meryl."'” Continuing her defence, the actress – who won her award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook – said "First of all, it's Meryl Streep. You can't offend Meryl Streep...," she maintained. "And then all of a sudden, 'I hate Meryl Streep.' As if, like, I've had my eyes on getting that girl forever, and I was like, 'Finally! I knew it would happen one day!' "
