RFK Jr Arrested At White House For Keystone Pipeline Protest
RFK Jr was arrested at the White House along with his son Conor Kennedy this week (Taylor Swift’s ex boyfriend). The Inquisitor reported that father and son were arrested during a climate change rally, protesting the Keystone XL pipeline. The Kennedys, along with actress Daryl Hannah and Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune, were detained for civil disobedience.
Robert F Kennedy, lawyer and president of the Waterkeeper Alliance, said in an emailed statement “It’s unfortunate that civil disobedience is the only recourse against a catastrophic and criminal enterprise that will enrich a few while impoverishing the rest of humanity and threatening the future of civilization.” This is not the first time that Robert Kennedy has been arrested for protesting. In 2001, he served 30 days in jail for trespassing, as part of a protest against Navy bombing exercises.
The planned Keystone XL Pipeline will funnel synthetic crude oil from Canada, to various areas of the United States. Since the project was first planned in 2008, it has faced several opposing lawsuits. The Sierra Club broke a ban on civil disobedience in order to join the protest, with Brune saying “For the first time in the Sierra Club’s 120-year history, we have joined the ranks of visionaries of the past and present to engage in civil disobedience, knowing that the issue at hand is so critical, it compels the strongest defensible action.” 48 people were arrested in total.
