The death of a character in a show can be difficult to stomach. We’d love to give some examples, but the wrath of an Internet scorned through spoilers is something nobody should have to face. In the case of an animated show like The Simpsons, death becomes an even tougher pill to swallow as it almost invariably stems from the death of a real person, not simply a character on a show.

When the late Marcia Wallace said goodbye following a battle against cancer last October, Edna Krabappel would soon follow. Of course, any tribute within The Simpsons for Edna Krabappel is both a touching tribute to the character Wallace brought life (and consummate pessimism) to, but also a dedication to the person Wallace was.

Bart wrote a touching tribute to his old teacher Edna.

Usually tasked with repeating his sins on the blackboard after school, Bart had something altogether more pertinent to write in its latest episode. The little yellow scamp penned, “We’ll miss you Mrs. K” in tribute to the late Marcia Wallace, who voiced the character of Mrs. Krabappel.

Bart and Edna had a love hate relationship on The Simpsons

Following her death the show's executive producer Al Jean described Wallace as "brilliant and gracious"and that she was "beloved by all at "The Simpsons" and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.

'The Simpsons' Actress Marcia Wallace Dies, Aged 70

The voice actress for Edna Krabappel and star of 'The Bob Newhart' show has passed away

Marcia Wallace, known best for her portrayal as Edna Krabappel - Bart Simpson's ever-tormented 4th grade teacher - has died. According to a TMZ report, Wallace died following a long battle with an unspecified illness at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family.

The news of Wallace's death was reportedly obtained by TMZ through her caregiver, who was unwilling to give away any details as to how the Emmy-winner passed away. The caregiver did reveal that Marcia had been suffering with an illness for several months now and also said that she died in relative comfort in the company of her loved ones. Our thoughts are with them in this difficult period.

It is believed that her passing was caused due to complications arising form a long-fought battle with breast cancer, according to Deadline. Marcia was a staunch campaigner for breast cancer, having been diagnosed with the disease in 1985.
