Grammy Awards 2014 Nominations: Who Are The Notable Absentees On The Nominee's List

  • 09 December 2013

The 2014 Grammy Awards will take place in January 2014, with the full list of nominees being revealed over the weekend. Jay-Z was the most capped nominee, with nine nods in total, whilst Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk were also among the list of potential winners, but there were a number of artists who were nowhere to be seen on the list of nominations.

After their shock win in 2011, Arcade Fire have been ignored this time

Despite their last album, The Suburbs, being a runaway success at the 2011 Grammy Awards, Arcade Fire are nowhere to be seen on next year's list. Their fourth album, Reflektor, was met with almost universal praise and some critics noted that it was an improvement form their latest release, but it seems as though the Grammy committee weren't as impressed as everyone else. The Canadian band don't even appear in the Best Alternative categories, however it is pleasing to see Tame Impala and Vampire Weekend among the nominees in this category, especially considering VW released one of the albums of the year with Modern Vampires of the City.

Another notable act missing from the nominations list are The Arctic Monkey's whose latest album AM may have finally won them wider recognition in the USA, but clearly not enough to be taken into consideration by the Grammy's. Fellow Brit James Blake is up for the Newcomer award, however his second album Overgorwn hasn't been shown any individual love despite it already being the winner of the Mercury Music Prize earlier this year. His appearance in the Newcomer category is also confusing given the fact that he has been active in the music scene for a number of years already and won major acclaim for his first, self-titled album.

The upcoming awards ceremony has shown a lot of love for rap, but only commercial rap as a number of commendable, yet still-underground hip-hop artists were overlooked for a nomination. Earl Sweatshirt's debut album Doris has won more than double the amount of praise Jay-Z's average-at-best Magna Carta...Holy Grail, yet it is the elder statesman who has been shown recognition from the established music committee. What's more, even though Kendrick Lamar had already begun to establish himself as an artist before the release of his exceptional Good Kid, M.A.A.D City - which came out in 2012 - he is still up for the Newcomer award, whilst break through artists like Chance the Rapper and Earl remain in the shadows.

Despite being one of the most-discussed acts of 2013, Haim are another glaring omission from the nominees list. The all-girl three-piece have released some great pop records over the year, yet they have been overlooked in favour of more commercial, radio-friendly artists such as Imagine Dragons (who are inexcusably place in the Best Rock category as well) and P!nk. And how come Lady Gaga isn't among the pop nominees, but P!nk and Lana Del Rey are?

The Grammy Awards are renowned for ignoring some of the best artists in favour of established acts, so some of these omissions are understandable, but not excusable by any means. With so many glaring omissions in the 2014 list, this will no doubt go on to continue the argument 'are The Grammy's still relevant?' even further, not that it will change anything about future awards ceremonies.
