90s Popstars Eternal Re-Group: 5 Reunions To Look Out For In 2014

  • 27 December 2013

Calling all fans of cheesy, sing-along 1990s pop: girlband Eternal have been confirmed as part of the line-up for ITV2's The Big Reunion alongside Gareth Gates, A1 and Damage. The news that Louise Redknapp's chart-dominating, all female group were re-grouping even just for a single television programme got us compiling a list of next year's reported comebacks.

1) Outkast

The most high-profile reunion of 2014 will be that of hip-hop unit Outkast who are strongly rumoured to be returning with an appearance at California's Coachella festival. After a six year hiatus, Andre 3000 and Big Boi are reportedly finally back together and are not only planning a 2014 tour but possibly a new album too. A source told Billboard that it was "all systems go" for the hip-hoppin' duo who have set their sights on the US festival in April.

Though neither has been inactive since 2006's Idlewild, a return under the moniker Outkast would be a welcome shot of excitement for the hip-hop and pop worlds next year. Of course, if Outkast were to reunite, the legendary Coachella would be the perfect platform for them after numerous acts have re-entered the musical sphere, including Pixies in 2004, Rage Against The Machine in 2007, Pavement in 2010 and the scheduled exclusive headline acts the Stone Roses and Blur.

2) Gnarls Barkley

On the back of Outkast's purported reformation, music duo Andre 3000 and Big Boi apparently won't be the only rappers reuniting in 2014 as fellow Atlanta rapper CeeLo Green has announced a Gnarls Barkley reunion is on the cards. Grammy winning musical duo CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse, who are famed for their platinum-selling single 'Crazy,' haven't publically confirmed whether or not a definite 2014 reunion is underway but TMZ released a clip in which Green is asked when Gnarls Barkley is going to get back together and Green says, "Yeah, next year."

Whilst it's not yet clear whether a Gnarls Barkley/Outkast onstage reunion at Coachella 2014 would be too much to hope for, the four are known to be close friends. Green has hinted more than once at at least some new material on the horizon

3) ABBA?

Though there is most definitely still a big, fat question mark over this rumoured reunion, the idea that seventies Swedish popsters ABBA could be considering making a return in 2014 to mark their 40th anniversary is one that has caught fire. Speculation has been fuelled by former band member Agnetha Faltskog, who has revealed that the Swedish group are considering reforming more than 30 years after their acrimonious split.

Now older and wiser at 63, Faltskog hinted that a reunion could be on the cards to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's hit 'Waterloo.' "Of course it's something we're thinking about," she told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. We shouldn't get too excited though: the group has repeatedly turned down offers to reunite, including a $1billion deal in 2000, and have publically vowed never to appear on stage again.

Faltskog's resolve seemed to be weakening this year when she indicated she might change her mind, saying: "Maybe a charity concert? I would not say no right away."

4) McBusted

Okay, so this may be less of a reunion and more of an evolution but this doesn't stop us getting all excited that early noughties guitar band Busted are teaming up with the still-going-strong Mcfly, sans Charlie Simpson. Though both bands were born from the same musical epoch, Mcfly managed to stay as a unit whilst Busted disbanded after Charlie Simpson moved to heavier metal climes. James Bourne and Matt Willis have now got together with Mcfly's Danny, Dougie, Harry and Tom for what looks set to be THE stadium throwback show of 2014.

McFly + Busted = McBusted! Who's Excited?

Though Mcfly have insisted that they'll still be a functioning unit after McBusted has been packed up, the new supergroup have announced an extensive UK tour after being met with a tidal wave of enthusiasm for their planned project. The 6-piece have been spotted out and about together and have promised to play songs from both respective bands as well as some new collaborative material. Don't miss out!

5) Day 26

Fans of bad boy R&B group Day 26 are in luck: a reunion has been confirmed by the band themselves via Twitter with a 30 city comeback tour planned. All original five members, Robert Curry, Brian Andrews, Willie Taylor, Qwanell "Q" Mosley, and Michael McCluney, are said to on board for the reunion. Though Sean "P Diddy" Combs won't be joining his former bandmates, he gave the reforming Day 26 his blessing.

Day 26 haven't exactly been on a 30 year hiatus, having split in summer 2012, but this doesn't mean that the prospect of new music and live appearances won't be exciting for the groups legions of fans waiting expectantly for some new material.
