Hype Machine Nearly Explodes As Coen Brothers Join Steven Spielberg And Tom Hanks

The combination of The Coen Brothers, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks combining on what is being described as a cold war thriller has the potential to break every website on earth through sheer anticipation and ‘will this be the best thing ever’ articles. Luckily for some, we’re here to remind you of things like ‘The Monuments Men’ and ‘The Counsellor. Now breath.

So here’s what we know so far: Joel and Ethan Coen are on board to pen a draft script telling the story of James Donovan - an attorney who became heavily involved in the Cold by negotiating the release of downed U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers with the KGB. This is all according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Spielberg hasn’t made a movie since 2012’s ‘Lincoln’, which saw Daniel Day Lewis scoop the prize for Best Actor at the Oscars in one of the most obvious awards in the Academy’s history. He is signed on to direct an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s BFG – due for release in 2016 – and the general consensus is that he’ll be able to squeeze another film in before then. Although ‘squeezing in’ films isn’t always conducive to making good ones.

The Coen Brothers recently found their latest batch of critical acclaim with ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ but have won the Academy Award for writing along in Best Screenplay for ‘No Country For Old Men’ and ‘Fargo’, which has recently been turned into a TV series starring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton.

And this isn’t the first time they’ll take on writing duties without stepping behind the camera, too, as they did so with Angelina Jolie's film Unbroken.
