Pamela Pearl finds herself emotionally cut off from her wealthy father, a conservative city commissioner, who has her sent to a New York psychiatric hospital for evaluation. It's there she meets wild child Nicky Marotta, who has big dreams of becoming a star and encourages Pamela's poetry. They decide to escape the hospital and go on the run, hiding out and setting up a band. Meanwhile, radio DJ Johnny LaGuardia has caught wind of the missing girls and covers the story on his show. After eventually meeting the girls, they form a close bond and Pamela uses the station to reach out to her hypocritical father. She learns to come out of her shell and find her own identity, but when she's ready to return home, Nicky wants to stay as she is; independent and performing illegal gigs in Times Square. Teenage self-discovery can be a tumultuous thing - and these girls need each other to survive it.
