Laila is an outspoken and gregarious Indian teenager with Cerebral Palsy, who wants what anybody else could want in the world at that age; to fall in love. When, against all odds, she receives a university acceptance letter allowing her to travel to New York and study, she finds herself on a whirlwind, coming of age adventure filled with heartache and sexual exploration. When her attempts at getting a boyfriend end in heartbreak, she falls for another girl, and finds herself not only having to cope with her disability, but also her culture, and her family's reactions to her bisexuality. There's no question that this bright, feisty teen will overcome her troubling venture into adolescence – but who's going to help her fight along the way?

This heartwarming teen drama is filled to the brim with themes rarely touched upon in filmmaking. It has been directed and written by Shonali Bose ('Amu') and Nilesh Maniyar, and has already managed to land an award, scooping up the NETPAC Award at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, and we wouldn't be surprised if there were many more to come. 'Margarita With A Straw' is set to hit UK cinemas on October 17th 2014.
