American Teenager Shares Photos Of First Ever Nirvana Gig

  • 23 July 2015

An American teenager has unwittingly uncovered some never-before-seen photographs of Nirvana’s first ever gig and published them online, making her officially the coolest kid in the world right now.

19 year old Maggie Poukkula, from Seattle, Washington, found a photo strip dating from March 1987 in one of her father Tony’s books, and tweeted it to the delight of Nirvana fans worldwide. Her post contained the caption: “Pictures of my dad and Kurt Cobain playing together back in the day.”

However, she had absolutely no idea that the pictures were from the first ever gig that Nirvana ever played, in Raymond, Washington. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said “my dad showed me them a while back, but he never mentioned that's what was going on in the photos. I found out because of all the articles. I didn't realize it was such a historical thing. I thought they were just cool pictures of my dad and Kurt jamming together.”

Tony Poukkula, then a member of the Seattle band Laytem, was friendly with Cobain growing up and offered to host a gig in his basement to give the fledgling band their first taste of performing live. At that time, the group consisted of Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Aaron Burckhard.

During the performance in question, Poukkula apparently joined the group on guitar for a couple of Led Zeppelin cover versions, which were apparently ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘How Many More Times’, which the band performed alongside embryonic versions of ‘Aero Zeppelin’, ‘Mexican Seafood’ and ‘Hairspray Queen’.

These photos come just a few months after Brett Morgen’s intimate documentary Montage of Heck, which pretty much closed the book on Nirvana. As part of the process, Morgen was granted unprecedented access to the vaults, uncovering never-before-heard demos and cover versions, home video footage and mountains of notebooks.
