The Beatles star, who died in 1980, would have turned 75 this week (beg05Oct15), and to celebrate his birthday, his widow invited thousands of fans to Central Park in New York City.

Yoko hoped to set a new record by forming the largest human peace sign, breaking the previous number of 5,800, but only an estimated 2,000 turned up, according to Guinness World Records adjudicator Philip Robertson.

Yoko told the crowd, "Thank you for coming today. I really appreciate it. I love you!" and Dave Davis from The Kinks performed on the stage.

The star is set to be in Iceland on John's actual birthday on Friday (09Oct15) to light the Imagine Peace Tower memorial, which was unveiled in 2007.

Music legend John was fatally shot outside his home opposite Central Park at the age of 40.
