California amassed 24,000 chart sales to take the number one spot, knocking off Adele’s 25, which had returned to the top after her Glastonbury performance. The album is the band’s first to feature Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba on vocals, replacing founding member Tom DeLonge.

Skiba joined the band in March 2015 after DeLonge left in order to focus on other projects. They then began recording California later that year, describing the tracks as "the best material we've written or put out in years.”
